A chapter from my life, internship at TVS Credit Services -By Chhaya Govil from Welingkar Institute of Management
We go through so many journeys, starting with some thoughts, ending with some other. You never know what you will find on each road, even though you plan how things will happen and what all you are going to achieve. But in the end, life has its own way to give you diverse learnings, treasure or wonderful people. This gives you a chance to see things from a different perspective.
I have this way of thinking-leave no stone unturned. So, even if you fail, you know you tried. At every journey, I try to find the positive aspects and keep my reflections of what I have learned in that journey.
So, before I begin with my internship journey at TVS CS, I want you to imagine life as a book where every journey, small or big, is a chapter. That means, sooner or later you will move to a different chapter. Every chapter will encapsulate a different goodie for you to cherish and embrace forever.
Well, that’s how my Chennai Diaries came to an end. Now, I’ll take you back to the moment when it all started.
There I was in Bangalore, waiting to get placed as a summer intern and gain exposure in HR. I wanted to do HR since the starting of my MBA journey. However, I lacked discipline and dedication. Thus, at every step, I used to doubt myself: Is this the right thing to do? Should I continue down this road? What if it’s a wrong decision?
Finally, after 2 rounds of Telephonic Interview, I got an internship at TVS Credit Services, Chennai as an HR intern. Like any other intern, I had a lot of curiosity about the kind of work I will be doing, the kind of people I will be interacting with and other kinds of stuff like living arrangements, roommates, commuting issues, etc.
I came to Chennai on 1st May, just after my exams ended on 30th April. My internship commenced from 2nd of May with a planned induction program for the first-ever summer interns. We were a batch of 16 summer interns from different management colleges. We already knew about the other interns but to meet them in person on the first day was quite a different feeling. It felt like I was brought back to office life and now things cannot be “just casual”. We got a surprise welcome kit along with introductions from the top leaders. They made us feel like we were already a part of the culture. All we needed was to get started with work.
We got detailed descriptions of our roles and responsibilities from our mentors and things just fell into place. The first month went by breezily- no commute trouble, living arrangements were a little unsatisfactory but still manageable, work was fun and everything was going according to plan.
Soon, the second month started and it felt like everything had started falling apart. Everything was a mess, from difficulty in finding an auto in the morning to water troubles in the evening. Also, the final deliverables were not easy to plan and share with the mentor. This resembled a wave having crests and troughs, where you start feeling so many different emotions. From anger to sadness, from uncertainty to nervousness, from happiness to satisfaction- that in the end it’ll all be okay and then you can stop and reflect. There’s a reason why people ask you to move forward and keep looking back at specific intervals. Only you can connect the dots and see the bigger picture taking shape.
These are the few learnings from my internship at TVS that might help you in your journey too:
- The grass is not greener on the other side. You might think that the other person is getting a better opportunity but what you have is because it needs to teach you something. So, don’t forget to find lessons from your opportunity.
- Discipline is what will keep you dedicated and with a sense of purpose. There are a lot of things that I had/have planned for myself. Most of them just remain ideas because of the immense lack of discipline. My mentor explicitly asked me to work upon it. Without discipline, you won’t be able to achieve your goals.
- Don’t take things personally. We all are devils in someone’s story. Try to get perspective and see why certain things have to be a certain way.
- Don’t lose heart: You never know what tomorrow will bring. Try being optimistic.
- After starting the internship, I realized every function will have its plus and minus points. All I needed to do was decide which matters most.
- It’s your perspective on life that matters a lot. The way you see a situation will decide whether it was a chapter worth reading again or not. Sometimes just outlining the important points in every chapter makes all the difference.
This was my internship journey at TVS CS. I get to learn and see things differently from different mentors, each having their own ideology of doing things. It isn’t only about what we bring to the table but also about what we make of it.
Remember, you must prepare a goal plan for yourself at the start of each chapter. You should keep a few of these questions in mind: What do you expect from yourself, personally and professionally? What do you want to learn in 2 months?
Do good and shine. All the best for your new journeys!
