In 2013, two IIT alumni founded Ather, a two-wheeler electric manufacturer. Since its inception, Ather has expanded to provide multiple other services, namely experience centers, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and a charging network (Ather Grid). Ather Grid is the nation’s largest EV two-wheeler fast charging network.
Ather has slowly but surely embroiled itself in the nation’s two-wheeler market, spreading its power across the country. But, to expand its reach further, Ather needed to hire the right talent that could help it realize its vision.
In this case study, we’ll look at how Ather, a company known for marrying passion with purpose found a way to accurately and speedily assess the right talent for multiple roles with Unstop.
Can Multiple Problems Have One Solution?
In 2021, Ather had a vision of “growing by 10x”, as stated by its co-founder, Tarun Mehta. Naturally, Ather was on the lookout for people who had a passion for building. But, with the kind of growth Ather envisioned, finding the right people for various roles (from engineering to operations to sales) seemed like a daunting task.
Assessing the right talent is always a task. Assessing the right talent for multiple, specialized roles where domain-specific knowledge is a must just makes the process trickier. That’s where Ather was stuck.
A single platform to conduct multiple assessments for diverse roles with real-time evaluation and feedback, a comprehensive knowledge bank, and ace proctoring checks? Unstop was the obvious choice.
The Power Of Unstoppable Assessments
Unstop has always understood that conducting assessments means tailoring them to specific job roles and skills. When Ather faced a roadblock, Unstop stepped in to help it conduct the assessments.
Over two years, from June 2021 to April 2022, Ather partnered with Unstop to conduct 20k+ assessments for engineering profiles, as well as other roles, in sales, human resources, data analyst, etc.
Here’s what this implies:
- Unstop offered the domain knowledge that Ather required when hiring for specialized roles like Embedded Engineer, Android Developer, Software Analyst, etc.
- Unstop also allowed Ather to conduct real-time assessments, with state-of-the-art proctoring checks. This ensured that Ather was able to shortlist candidates with efficiency and, in a more transparent manner.
- Ather used Unstop to conduct assessments for both lateral hiring and campus hiring for full-time roles and internships. It conducted assessments at 10+ campuses, including IIT Madras, BITS Pilani, IISc, Jadavpur University, etc.
- In 2021-22, Ather partnered with Unstop to host 40 listings. The number more than doubled to 84 listings in 2022-23.
- Ather primarily employed three of the six assessments offered by Unstop - Aptitude Tests, Technical Tests, and Coding Assessments. Unstop was able to help Ather conduct assessments speedily, without compromising on quality.
Rohith Hariharan, Lead Talent Partner (CRP) & Head Employer Branding, Ather Energy stated that they were not looking for people who could “prove” what they’d learned, but rather, people who could “apply” what they’d learned. With Unstop’s question bank (Unstop furnished questions for 36 of 44 assessments conducted by Ather in Year 1), assessment types, and proctoring checks, Ather was able to do just that.
In Hariharan’s words, “They (Unstop) spent as many sleepless nights as we did, even when the campus called us in an early morning slot at 4 o'clock. The amount of effort these guys put in without batting an eyelid, I would recommend them to anybody.”
Impressed with the results of this partnership, Ather went on to host Craze-a-Thon with Unstop - a coding hiring challenge. Read all about it here.
