The long wait finally comes to an end as DU announces June 20, as the date of commencement for the 2020 admissions. The admission process had already been delayed by over a month as compared to previous years due to the pandemic. Now, after a three-hour meeting of the academic council, the date has been announced as June 20.

From June 20 to July 4, applicants to the university will get a 2-week period to complete the registration on the website. Officials at DUCC, the central IT institute of the university have said that short of any technical glitches, the registration will begin at the decided date.

According to a member of the standing committee involved in the decision-making process, the portal will open for all courses - UG, PG, M.Phil, and PhD. The second step in the process would begin after the declaration of the CBSE result. After which the first cut-off is expected to come sometime in mid-August.

There is a possibility that CBSE is unable to conduct these final exams as the COVID-19 cases continue to rise rapidly. In that case, the pre-board results might be considered for the final evaluation. That possibility was also discussed in the academic council meeting with regard to DU admissions 2020.

Council member Arun Kumar Attree also proposed to cancel the admission cancellation fee of Rs 1000 in light of the prevailing economic crisis. However, the recommendation was declined by the committee. He was of the opinion that cancellation fee not be charged from disadvantaged students between three cut-offs. The committee also announced that in case of any discrepancy of name spelling or missing surname, the verification for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD will be done from their other certificates. The admission will not be rejected on the basis of the said discrepancy.

ECA and Sports Quota

Further, the trials for admissions under the Sports and Extra-curricular Activities (ECA) category have been called off due to the pandemic. A collective of 5% of seats are reserved under these two categories. In another deviation from the usual proceedings. admission will be granted on the basis of certificates across 27 disciplines for sports quota. This move was supported by former DU sports council (DUSC) chairperson, CS Dubey. Although he did warn that cases could come up with fraudulent certificates. The weightage ascribed is 60% with the hope to curb the use of fake certificates.

The last time when the trials for sports were not conducted as a part of the admission process was in 2011. However, the situation today demands this plan of action. In the case of ECA, the admissions will be granted only to the National Cadet Corps (NCCE) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) certificate holders as opposed to the 14 activities listed every year.

Last year, this entire process (from registration to the announcement of the first cut-off) took place between May 30 and June 28. This year the first cut-off would also depend on the pending class 12 CBSE examination, which is scheduled between July 1 - 15.
