They are not just responsible for putting bricks together, rather they create visual art which stands as a testament of their work for ages to come. Acknowledging the contributions they make, every year on October 5 the world celebrates architects with Architecture Day. Keep reading to figure out how you can pursue a degree in architecture, and what you can do with it.

Pursuing a degree in architecture can be a long and tedious project, but it reaps long-term benefits with countless rewards. With desirable creative, visual, design, and practical skills, architects contribute in countless ways to the growth and development of any society. In honour of Architecture Day, let us look at resources from which you can pursue a degree in architecture, and what you can do with it. 

Architecture degrees in India

A degree in architecture teaches students about the fundamentals of the comprehensive subject, along with its practical application. From drawing 3D designs to producing digital blueprints, you will be learning everything to be a successful architect. Ideating, mapping, designing, and overseeing construction are the major processes which are given utmost importance under a degree in architecture. 

By complementing your rational yet artistic perspective with a problem-solving approach, you too can pursue a degree in architecture from the following institutions in India:

1. School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi 

As a deemed to be a university having recognition as an institute of National importance, the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi is home to over 1000 students pursuing a degree in architecture. Established back in 1941, it offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programs. With either merit entrance based admission criteria. 

2. Indian Institute of Technology

If you wish to adopt an unconventional approach to architecture, and carry the IIT label, then IIT Kharagpur and Roorkee are the perfect places to pursue a degree in architecture. In fact, these are the only two IITs which provide courses in architecture via an Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT). The courses here focus more on practical application of theoretical knowledge, with frequent field trips and projects. 

3. Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Mumbai

If the success of a college was to be determined by its alumni, then Sir J.J. College of Architecture leads the way. With architects, planners and even writers like Arundhuti Roy making their way in the institute's distinguished line of alumni, the institute has always ensured that creativity remains in the pinnacle of learning in the institution. It is one of the most famous and heritage colleges in India as its history can be traced back up to 1857.

4. National Institute of Technology

As one of the premier autonomous technical and research universities in India, a degree in architecture from NIT is wonderful in terms of its rankings and diversity in courses. NIT Trichy and Calicut are some of the best institutes in the country, with selection based on scores in JEE Main, GATE, CAT, NIMCET Entrance Exams.

5. Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University (CEPT), Ahmedabad 

Ranked 4th for Architecture by NIRF 2020, CEPT is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) of the Government of India. Although the institute offers courses in a number of related disciplines, the architecture course here is particularly famous.

Some other reputable colleges for a degree in architecture which should be noted are Birla Institute of Technology (Ranchi and Mesra), Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), and BMS College for Architecture (Bengaluru). 

Career prospects in architecture

Both private and government organisations provide reputable positions to architects across different job profiles. Some of the job profiles you can secure with a degree in architecture are mentioned below:

1. Architect 

The first and most obvious job profile to pursue after a degree in architecture is that of an architect. As an architect, you’ll work closely with clients and users to design new buildings or complete extensions or alterations to existing ones, ensuring that they are safe, cost-effective and functional. 

2. Interior and spatial designer

Considering a degree in architecture will provide you with a clear idea of how to utilise a space to its optimum potential, an interior and spatial designer is another career option available. You will be required to design or renovate internal spaces, fixtures and fittings, using their architectural, creative design and project management skills to ensure that spaces are both attractive and efficient.

3. Production designer 

If you love the world of film and television, then the role of a production designer is the perfect path to walk on after pursuing a degree in architecture. As a production designer, you’ll work closely with the producer and director and use your creative flair to develop a complete visual outline for the production they’re working on. In other words, you will be responsible for the visual look of the story. 

4. Urban/town planner

A position which is offered by both public and private organisations is a popular career choice amongst architects post graduation. Those who are interested in development, regeneration, and sustainability can pursue this path after completing a degree in architecture. To become a town planner, you’ll need strong multitasking skills, commercial awareness, attention to detail, and be confident in listening to and negotiating with a diverse range of people.

5. Building surveyor 

If you are sensitive to details and pay attention to designs, then you should consider the role of a building surveyor after a degree in architecture. The may be associated with either the government, or the agency which has commissioned the building, and are concerned with conserving, modifying, fixing, renovating and restoring existing buildings. 

6. Architectural/building technologist 

With a degree in architecture, and knowledge in science and engineering, architectural technologists are responsible for creating tough, resilient and sustainable constructions and refurbishments. Depending on their employer, they are tasked with analyzing the needs and unique facets of a building project and coming up with functional building designs in accordance with modern standards of practices of architecture, engineering and construction.

7. Restoration/conservation architects 

If you are interested in working with the government, or organisation like UNESCO to preserve heritage sites, then consider being a restoration architect. Architectural conservation is gaining popularity in India as a career choice post a degree in architecture. With this job profile you are entitled to protect and enhance buildings with historical, architectural or cultural significance. 

8. Project manager

An architectural project manager splits their time between the office and field, discussing with clients and ensuring the completion of projects. They oversee each step of the construction process. Your degree in architecture should be complemented with leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills to plan, organise, and staff the project.  

Some of the largest public-sector employers in India across these job profiles include the Public Works Department, The Archaeological Department, Department or Railways, Public Sector Undertakings, and National Institute of Urban Affairs. Private-sector employers include DLF, Sahara, and Eros Groups.
