In the past decade, the movement against global warming and climate change has gained immense popularity. Geographers, Climatologists, and Biologists have put forth numerous theories about how the coming years will show the devastating impact of climate change. Owing to the vast research in this field, many leading institutes have also begun to offer courses that specialize in climate change and sustainability. Moving with the trend, Delhi University has also announced the setting up of School of Climate Change and Sustainability (DSCC&S) under the Institute of Eminence Scheme.
This venture is supposed to be a step towards training human resources capable of managing the environmental challenges faced by the nation and the world. The school will be headed by Prof. CR Babu, a renowned environmental scientist, who will serve as the honorary Director. Prof. Inderjit Singh, internationally acclaimed plant ecologist, will be the Joint Director.
The aim of setting up DSCC&S is to find solutions to questions such as - how to achieve sustainability in major cities, how to face the environmental challenges that will definitely come our way soon? The HRD ministry has played a major role in providing foundation support for this endeavor. The HRD ministry gave a statement saying that this will be a focus on developing young minds towards sustainable innovations that work towards national development.
The products of the School of Climate Change and Sustainability are expected to be individuals who have expertise in managing sustainable developmental technologies in areas of energy and resource recycling. With a climate crisis already underway, it is difficult to ignore the need for people who can fight and find solutions to this predicament. Delhi University is a central university with some of the most diverse students in the country. This step towards an institute that will be dedicated to study and research means to a sustainable future can prove to be an important milestone in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.
