IIM Ranchi was sealed on Sunday, May 31, after one of its admin staff members tested positive for COVID-19. This is an unnerving occurrence as the institute is presently working out of Suchana Bhavan, which is right opposite the chief minister’s official residence and also houses the information department of the state government. The infected individual is a 32-year old resident of Ketari Bagan Area.
Shortly after receiving information about the case, a health department team began contact tracing. The patient has now been shifted to the integrated COVID hospital at RIMS.
The district administration is working on contact tracing within the Suchana Bhavan as well. So far, it is estimated that 14 people have come in contact with the infected person in the workplace. Swab samples have been collected from those who are found to have had contact with him and they are being sent into home quarantine.
Local Administration at Chutia, the police jurisdiction of the area, also initiated a contact tracing exercise and zeroed in on 30 people who may have come in contact with the IIM worker.
IIM Ranchi director Shailendra Singh has said that the staff member was asymptomatic. He also said that he was attending office as the admission procedure for the 2020 session was underway. IIM-Ranchi continues to avoid full attendance due to the pandemic. He further said that the office would be sealed for the next 2-3 months for sanitization. The decision to open the offices will not be taken immediately.
Since the academic activities are mostly being conducted online, there will be no disruption in them due to the shutting down of campus.
