In a bid to enhance its global standing and secure its leadership place, IIT Delhi has laid the foundation of the School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI) on its campus. The ScAI is independently established and will be open for new Ph.D. program admissions from the next admission phase, i.e., from January 2021. Plans and efforts to offer PG courses by ScAI are in process.
Artificial Intelligence is what lies ahead
Professor V. Ramgopal Rao who is the Director of IIT Delhi remarked that technology has taken quantum leaps and a country’s worth will be assessed depending on its Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability. It is one of the reasons why so many countries are hugely investing in India. Even the Prime Minister of India has stressed on the significance of AI in his policies.
Mister Rao added although India ranks 5th globally in terms of the maximum number of AI companies and AI jobs; we still lag behind as far as the number of AI researchers and the quality and quantity of AI is concerned. He emphasized that in order to cross this bridge and fill the gap, IIT Delhi has laid the foundation of the ScAI.
Distinguished objectives of ScAI
More than 50 IIT Delhi faculty members are investing their time and energy in this particular field, in their individual capacities. ScAI aims to bring them all together under the umbrella of research productivity as a force multiplier. The School is also set to enhance the global image and external branding of the institute. A well-integrated group in AI will try intense hiring of students and faculty members in order to polish its global visibility.
ScAI also focuses on becoming the one-stop-center for any institution, government or industry who are intent on funding or associating with the AI revolutions. It will also become a platform where the domain problems related to the institutions, governments, societies and industries can be shared which will then be coordinated with the respective faculty members of IIT Delhi with appropriate expertise.
Besides all these, the ScAI is also motivated to educate students regarding AI. For this, the central focal point will be on PG level courses. A professional educational program will be set in place once the core of AI researchers is strengthened.
A multi-disciplinary program
The programs offered by the ScAI are multi-disciplinary, which focuses on a faculty model that is flexible. It will be divided into the core, joint and adjunct faculty members. Professor Mausam, the founding head of ScAI remarked that the members in the core faculty will be those who believe AI (or its applications) are their primary research area. They will also shoulder the responsibility in the development of the School and about twenty members will be hired in the next ten years to become a part of the core faculty.
However, the adjunct faculty members will be those who are working full-time in other departments but will surely interact, guide and provide critical insight to the faculty members who are working in the research initiatives in the ScAI. Mister Mausam then remarked that they are also on a quest for external partners to help them shape the contours of the ScAI of IIT Delhi.
