A major hurdle that has been faced by many COVID suspected cases is the cost and duration that it takes to get a test done. IIT Hyderabad might have found a solution to this as it claims to have developed a new Covid-19 test kit. This test kit supposedly delivers results within 20 minutes of having collected the sample.
The current testing method being used is the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) for COVID testing. According to the team of researches from IIT Hyderabad, the new COVID testing kit is more cost-effective. It functions on the basis of a unique sequence of conserved regions of the COVID genome.
The team is looking at patenting their idea. Alongside clinical trials are underway at ESIC Medical College and Hospital at Hyderabad. It is also seeking approval from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR). The new testing kit is easy to carry around, cheaper, and quicker. While the laboratory cost for the test kit is Rs 550, it will go down to Rs 350 in mass production.
Back in April, IIT Delhi became the first academic institute to come up with a testing kit approved by ICMR. Their kit was also based on PCR. Furthermore, many other IITs such as IIT Madras have come up with innovative solutions to tackle the COVID pandemic.
India’s COVID curve is still steep and we need all hands on deck to fight this pandemic. IITs are surely stepping up to the task!
