What I learnt during my internship at HDFC Bank -By Natasha D'souza from SIESCOMS Mumbai
I worked as a Project Trainee under a Relationship Manager. The project title was based on digitization. In the past decade, HDFC Bank has grown tremendously in the private sector with NPA’s of 0.2%, which is the lowest in the entire industry.
When I learnt to build a strong bridge between customers and the bank
During my internship, I had the opportunity to interact with high net-worth customers and help them build a strong relationship with the bank. Moreover, I got a chance to be a part of the new business opportunity in Mumbai region during the event “PadhYatra”. Honestly, it enhanced my sales and marketing skills. Cross-selling was another part of my job which included selling various financial products such as loan, credit cards, re-KYC, and insurance. To my surprise after tallying my success ratio in cold calling, I was able to convert 3 out of every 10 customers. Thus, these were the most exciting part of my internship experience. It helped me hone my sales and analytical skills.
Our Branch Manager introduced us to the team on the very first day. The Cluster Head was introduced a few days later. He asked us a few questions about our expectations and the timeline of our project. Our response impressed him and this lead to a field visit with the branch manager and cluster head for a new B2B initiative. During the course of my internship at HDFC Bank, I worked on certain targets assigned to me. To achieve those targets, I had to understand the needs of the customers as well as their psychological aspects. I learned about pitching a product to a client that matched all its requirements.
Things I learnt during my internship at HDFC Bank
- Pre-Sales for the education business segment under the Master Initiative.
- Market Research for prospective customers in the Santacruz, Mumbai.
- Catchment Scoping for the product DD19, for Small to Medium Enterprises and small shopkeepers in the region. It also included the sale of products like a credit card, personal loan, auto loan, etc.
- Understanding various banking operations such as SM305, batch journal-register, and cheque drop register.
One of the key takeaways of my internship at HDFC Bank was creating a good customer base and connections in the corporate world. I was also able to work on my technical skills like Tableau, Google Analytics, etc. I would surely love to join HDFC Bank for a full-time job as the relationship manager profile as it fits properly with my field of choice. It would not only give me an on-ground experience but it would help in understanding customers’ behavior. I would like to explore more about the sales world to develop new skills. Working for a leading bank like HDFC will truly be a dream come true for me.
