iSafe: Safer India Challenge aims to make Indian roads safer for all

As quoted by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, “Awakening the people to find a solution to Road-Traffic Accidents is utmost necessary and I am extremely happy that the students of IIT Delhi have taken this responsibility to reach the masses through IRSC.” With more than 50% of the 1.5 lakh road-crashes fatalities in India, it is very important that the youth between the age group of 15 to 34 years realize the importance of being safe on the roads. Hence, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in collaboration with Indian Road Safety Campaign (a body by students and alumni of IIT Delhi), started an annual championship called iSAFE: Safer India Challenge where the youth across the country from any background can join the government in solving road issues and making Indian roads safer while doing what they like to do.

The Safer India Challenge 2019

The Safer India Challenge 2019 is a 9-month long championship, with the aim to make roads safer for all and achieve path-breaking changes in the same. It is an initiative of Indian Road Safety Campaign in association with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Department of Science and Technology, National Crime Records Bureau (MHA), and the United Nations for Training and Research(UNITAR) held for colleges and schools all across India. Moreover, the vision for starting the championship is to rectify the problem of road safety from all ends by igniting the competitive spirit among youth to achieve path-breaking changes in the scenario.

With a vision to make Indian roads safer, Shri Rajnath Singh (Hon’ble Defence Minister), Shri Nitin Gadkari (Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways), Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj (Former Minister of external affairs), and Shri M L Mandaviya (Former Minister of State, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) launched the 3rd edition of iSAFE(9-month-long championship for 5000 schools and colleges across India) during the inaugural ceremony of the 30th National Road Safety Week on 4th February 2019, at Rajghat.

The championship will have 12 mega-events

The iSAFE'17 championship witnessed the participation of more than 500+ colleges across India with 7500+ technical, cultural, sports and other events over the 9 months along with 8 major events at premier locations in different cities. In 2018, the participation escalated to more than 1500+ colleges with 40,000+ students impacting more than 1.4 million people through the annual championship. The championship has created more than 33 infrastructural changes, 25+ research papers, 25000+ trained workforce, 7500+ offline and online events.

The championship will have 12 mega events apart from the smaller events going on in the schools and colleges. Also, these events will include competitions like Essay Writing, Debate, Movie-Making, Street Play, Hackathons, etc. All these competitions will have prizes and rewards for students. Apart from this, in the finale, the top three finalists will be given cash prizes of Rs. 25000, Rs. 20000, and Rs. 15000.

Registration for 'Safer India Challenge 2019' is open!

The registration is now open for schools and colleges. It will be done on the basis of a team, which should have a minimum of four students. The number of team members can exceed up to a maximum of 50. For schools, teams need to get approval from a faculty coordinator. However, for colleges, faculty approval is not required. Once a team is ready, interested students can register by visiting iSafe’s official website. This will include five domains; Technical, Medical, Law, Journalism, and Awareness. The students can choose one of them. However, common activities will be mandatory for everyone. Interested students can go to the portal and register themselves.

Moreover, the registration is open till 30th August 2019.

“Youth is the strongest pillar of our country. They forge the future leaders who possess the power of bringing the change. Currently, India needs this power of youth to fight against the alarming issue of road safety,” stated by Mr. Amar Srivastava, Founder, and President of Indian Road Safety Campaign.

Indian Road Safety Campaign (IRSC)

Indian Road Safety Campaign (IRSC), is one of the largest youth-led organization in India. It is present in over 50+ cities and 500+ colleges. It is working with the help of 2500+ youth working on spreading awareness, technical innovation, law, policy, and medical sectors. IRSC is presently working with organizations like the United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR), World Health Organisation (WHO), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), India, Niti Aayog and OLA to change the scenario of road safety in India.

Moreover, we can observe a sharp decline in the number of fatalities due to road crashes in upcoming years. We need more and more youth force to become a road-safety crusader and solve one of the most pressing issues. Also, one person and act can start something that can change the world. Let’s make the Indian roads safer together.
