As young professionals, prioritizing things at work can be a challenging task. Unless done with a proper vision, it could lead to a loss of credibility and restrict career opportunities.

According to the CEO of Meta Platforms - Mark Zuckerberg, the first step to a fulfilling job in any company is building relationships. He believes that working with people who share similar values on a human level helps to smoothly achieve work goals.

His advice for young people? Instead of being objectively focused, it is important to build meaningful professional relationships at work.

Zuckerberg's Mantra For Success

While talking to Lex Fridman, an MIT Computer Scientist who hosts his own podcast, Mark said that his success with Facebook back in 2004 was not because he dropped out of college or abandoned other interests he had.

Instead, it was the personal connections he made at Harvard that built the foundation of his success. "You become the people you surround yourself with", he said.

"I think probably people are too, in general, objective focused, and maybe not focused enough on the connections and the people who they’re basically building relationships with", he was quoted saying.

The Meta-CEO also clarified that his advice applies not only to professional life but more generally as well. He reflected on the connections he made at Harvard and how that paved the way for Facebook.

How Does Mark Zuckerberg Hire?

According to Mark Zuckerberg, the objective of a good hiring culture is to create an environment that is both productive and cohesive at the same time.

"It's all about finding personal compatibility," he said. In fact, in his opinion, hiring a candidate is not very different from choosing a friend or finding a partner.

The journey of Mark Zuckerberg began when he was a student at Harvard in the early 2000s. The five students with whom he founded Facebook were in fact his friends. Even though the group split up infamously, they planted the seeds for a digital revolution and created a company that is one of the largest in the world today with a market capitalization of USD 582.58 billion.

Highlighting the importance of relationships at work, the Meta-CEO said, "I will only hire someone to work for me if I could see myself working for them".

Evidently, even though the tide has turned for Facebook since its inception back in 2004, the work culture at the digital media giant has remained the same. An intimate environment of cohesion, cooperation, and productivity is the priority. When such an environment is in place, objectives would be met automatically.
