Nervous hands, quivering, tied below the chair. Lost eyes, looking for empathy. Drooping shoulders, carrying the worries of those many years of graduation. This is a glimpse into what your first interview would look like. Campus placements can be scary if you don’t prepare beforehand. Unpredictability and the terror of the recruiters’ questions might lead to a considerable increase in your pulse rate which is a basic cause for the common mistakes people make during placements.

Where staying calm and confident is the key, nervousness ruins your aura. Dilemma and indecisiveness govern your brain when you need to be optimistic and proactive. To save you the trouble of having to face rejection because of the basic human flaws, we have listed the common mistakes which you shouldn’t make during placement interviews.

  1. Not knowing yourself, the company and the role you’re being offered

A primary reason why many of your batchmates faced rejection is because they didn’t prepare well. Having insufficient knowledge of the company and the primary details is what makes you look ignorant in the eyes of the recruiter. It thus is essential to know the core details of the company and the role they’re offering. In addition to having a thorough insight about the company’s what and hows, it is vital to ensure that the shoes you’re being asked to step into, fit you well. Know your priorities and visualize yourself in the role you’re being offered. Picking comfortable shoes is better than hurting your feet later.

  1. Not being yourself, pretending to be somebody else

Interviews often make you want to pretend to be someone else, a better, more learned person than what you actually are. You try stepping into shoes of somebody you aren’t which often lands you in tricky situations. Interviewers are experienced individuals and they often comprehend if and when you put up a facade due to nervousness. On the contrary, students should be confident about themselves and stay poised in front of the interviewer. Maintain your individuality. It always is better to say “I don’t know” instead of beating around the bush and making an absurd answer.

  1. Not building an appropriate resume

Students have the habit of curating their resumes overnight. Incorporating copy-pasted bits from the internet, makes your resume look unprofessional and generic. In such cases, you’ll often be unable to explain the details in your resume which will give the interviewer an insight of the cracks in your resume. A personalized resume is what catches the eye of the recruiter and what you should keep in mind while creating one. Pro tip: Ensure that your resume does not have grammatical errors.

  1. Not being properly dressed for the interview

Even though the companies come to the campus for placements, you must be careful about dressing up appropriately for the interview. Wearing semi-formals or informals for placement interviews is not a good option in case you really want to get hired! The colours and design must be paid attention to and your formal clothing must reflect professionalism. As declared by a survey, interviewers most generally frame an opinion about the candidate in the first 3 minutes. In the most probable scenario, men should consider wearing a suit whereas women can dress in accordance to the role they’re applying for. If the position is in an IT or a management company, you can wear a formal suit. Otherwise, for the posts of writers or social media managers, ethnic wear like Kurtis can work too.

  1. Being overconfident

Where students are generally underconfident and nervous during the interview, there is one other lot which stays overconfident. Interviewers do not like students from both the lots, i.e., a Mr. know-it-all is equally unpreferable as the one who does not speak at all. You must listen to the recruiter carefully and take his/her opinions into consideration. In cases where your line of thought does not match his/her’s, disagree politely. A stubborn candidate is not even the last person they’re looking forward to hiring.

These are a few of the many caution tips which you must keep in mind while appearing for an interview. Paying attention to minute details, identifying your weaknesses and working on them effectively will ease the interview process for you, refraining you from the common mistakes people generally make during placements. This is the time to pick the sword up. Be your own warrior and win the placement battle!

Good luck!
