Although a report card does not define your career trajectory, Dhoni's school played an important role in where he is today. DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Jharkhand spotted Dhoni's passion and potential for sports.

At DAV, he was the goalkeeper of the school's football team. However, how was football going to be his fate when he was carved for cricket?

Keshav Ranjan Banerjee, the sports coach at DAV, selected Dhoni to play for the school cricket team. The coach saw Dhoni's talent even though the young boy did not have any measurable upper-body strength to clear the fitness test. Yet, Dhoni proved everyone wrong. Here, the young Dhoni displayed his exceptional wicketkeeping skills.

Dhoni's wicketkeeping skills allowed him to be a regular wicketkeeper of the Commando Cricket Club. This again acted as a blessing because he was picked up for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship in 1997/98.

Later, Dhoni dropped out of the B.Com degree from the prestigious Gossener College to chase his dream of becoming a cricketer. 

Struggle Years

Dhoni found it difficult to compete with candidates who came from the affluent A-tier states. Being helpless, he started working as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Kharagpur railway station. He worked there for three years, from 2001-2003.

Although helpless, he was not hopeless. He joined the Railways Ranji team, which turned his fate upside down. BCCI's Training Research Development Wing again spotted his talent. They gave him a chance to play in the India A-Team in the Kenya tour, giving him a dream MS Dhoni debut match. It was during this time that Dhoni worked on his batting technique and showed everyone his skills in batting talent.
