MS Dhoni Biography

How should we begin the MS Dhoni biography? His extraordinary life and career as a cricketer make it difficult to decide how should we introduce a man who is beyond all introduction.

Much before people knew the name of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, they had heard about the long-haired young lad 'Mahi.' Soon, people in the cricketing world (and outside of it) became familiar with this young fellow who was going to change their perspective towards cricket forever - along with their perspective towards several other things.

The first on the list is changing the perspective towards cricket being an elite people game. Almost every boy, when he gets his first cricket bat, wishes to represent India at the National level and International cricket. But how many really go on to do that? Not many, of course.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni came from a humble background. Born into a Hindu Rajput family to Paan Singh and Deviki Devi on July 7, 1981, M. S. Dhoni showed the world that your circumstances cannot prevent you from fulfilling your dreams.

The proud son of Paan Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is also credited for bringing Ranchi, Jharkhand, the MS Dhoni birthplace, out of the throes of the unknown. Not so long ago, Jharkhand was known for illegal mining activities and Maoist insurgency. Now, it is known for giving the country one of the best cricketers!

Did you know?

M. S. Dhoni's parents, Paan Singh and Deviki Devi moved to Ranchi from Uttarakhand for better job opportunities.

So, how did this journey of calm captaincy begin? Let's take a look!

MS Dhoni Education Qualification

Although a report card does not define your career trajectory, Dhoni's school played an important role in where he is today. DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Jharkhand spotted Dhoni's passion and potential for sports.

MS Dhoni biography - resume

At DAV, he was the goalkeeper of the school's football team. However, how was football going to be his fate when he was carved for cricket?

Keshav Ranjan Banerjee, the sports coach at DAV, selected Dhoni to play for the school cricket team. The coach saw Dhoni's talent even though the young boy did not have any measurable upper-body strength to clear the fitness test. Yet, Dhoni proved everyone wrong. Here, the young Dhoni displayed his exceptional wicketkeeping skills.

Dhoni's wicketkeeping skills allowed him to be a regular wicketkeeper of the Commando Cricket Club. This again acted as a blessing because he was picked up for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship in 1997/98.

Later, Dhoni dropped out of the B.Com degree from the prestigious Gossener College to chase his dream of becoming a cricketer.

Although helpless, he was not hopeless. He joined the Railways Ranji team, which turned his fate upside down. BCCI's Training Research Development Wing again spotted his talent. They gave him a chance to play in the India A-Team in the Kenya tour, giving him a dream MS Dhoni debut match. It was during this time that Dhoni worked on his batting technique and showed everyone his skills in batting talent.

Dhoni meets Sachin! Sachin Tendulkar had always been Dhoni's inspiration. His initial encounter with Tendulkar occurred during the Duleep Trophy 2001-02 season when Dhoni served drinks for the East zone team. At that time, Tendulkar was batting at 199* for the West zone. While Tendulkar requested a drink, Dhoni promptly provided him with a bottle. Despite the opportunity, Dhoni refrained from engaging in conversation, awestruck by the experience of meeting his childhood idol.

MS Dhoni Biography: The Early Cricket Career

After displaying awesome cricketing skills in the Kenya tour, he was selected for the India team's Bangladesh tour in 2004.

It was a big achievement for this middle-class boy from Ranchi. But, But, But, life had planned more hurdles for him. The MS Dhoni debut at ODI began with a duck, followed by low scores. However, the then-captain, Ganguly did not lose faith in his teammate. He insisted on keeping Dhoni on Team India.

It was in his 5th ODI that Dhoni gave a record performance of 148 runs at Vishakhapatnam against Pakistan. From then on, he showered Team India with runs.

The biggest breakthrough of his career was the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup. India did not have any victory in the World after the iconic 1983 World Cup, under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. The 2007 T20 World Cup was the aggressive captaincy debut of Dhoni.

Did you know?

In the 2007 T20 World Cup tournament, Yuvraj Singh made a record by hitting six sixes in six balls.

The 2007 T20 World Cup was a breath-stopping game between India and Pakistan. Dhoni's young team, India, was not only playing the stressful game against Pakistan (a matter of reputation), but they also had the pressure to bring the World Cup back home. And they did not disappoint the nation. They won. They won an incredible victory.

Dhoni repeated World Cup history again in 2011, becoming the only Indian captain to achieve this feat in Indian- International cricket scene.
