My journey at Cisco in the shoes of a Project Manager -By Shivam Aggarwal from SIBM Pune
As an IT engineer, you have this dream of working in a top-class tech company, and during my engineering days, I came across one such company Cisco- the worldwide leader in networking. At that time, I got aware of the industry they operated in and its products and services. Never at that point did I think about finding more about the work-life at Cisco.
My journey at Cisco
Four years later, during my MBA placements, I was attending a pre-placement talk by the Cisco leadership team. The team clearly explained the role offered and the things which set Cisco apart from others. A few of the things they mentioned focused on employees’ skill development and their customer-centric approach. The vision and mission synchronized with what Cisco has been doing in the past, including its emphasis on inclusion and focus on internal and external customers.
The decision to apply for the role looked right for my career. After a brief selection process, I finally landed the opportunity to be a part of the Cisco community. The onboarding at the company was very smooth and thus began my journey at Cisco. The team at Cisco planned the training and leadership sessions for new hires at regular intervals.
Tasks for the day
The initial period of training sets the platform for actual delivery - the real work. Our day to day activities include planning and monitoring project execution, managing risks and resolving issues, and managing stakeholders. The team regularly took the sessions’ feedback and ensured that we are engaged during this difficult time of the pandemic. This clearly reflects the ‘walk the talk’ approach as the new hires have to be project managers, and the role of a project manager is to plan and manage a project efficiently.
The managers are helpful and create an inclusive environment and support our development. I am lucky to be a part of such a high performing team at Cisco.
The experience
Every day is a new learning opportunity, and there are no Monday blues. Everybody feels motivated and inspired throughout the work day, and believes they can do something good for society. Cisco’s CSR activities are aligned with empowering communities and creating opportunities for people. New hires like me feel excited and actively participate in such activities. These activities also help in breaking creativity blockage.
Cisco fosters a very conscious culture with everyone practising self-awareness of their environment. We are instilled with the feeling of accountability and empowerment. The company is truly the World’s Best Workplace to work in. I’ve had my shares of ups and downs but my journey at Cisco has truly been remarkable. I’m thankful for the great opportunity at Cisco.
