'Opt-Out' option offered to CA exam candidates by ICAI

With the ambiguity surrounding the already postponed exam season, there has been worry spread amongst a number of students. The candidates for the Chartered Accountant (CA) exam are no exception. With their exam scheduled to be held in July, amidst the ongoing crisis, the students are bound to feel a great amount of stress. So, the good news that has come on Monday might give them some relief. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced that the students have an option to opt-out of the July exam and carry forward their candidature to the November exam. The July exams, which are scheduled to begin on July 29, will be conducted with all necessary measures against COVID-19.

The notification released by the regulator, ICAI says that students who decide to opt-out of the current examination cycle, examination fees, and exemption (if any) will also be shifted to the next examination. The current attempt will be deemed as cancelled/not counted, thus not causing any loss to their candidature.

A 3-day window, from June 17 to June 20 will be opened during which, a declaration by interested candidates has to be submitted. Approximately 39,000 candidates appear for the CA exam every year. It is not only a competitive but also a taxing examination. There are eight papers in total, in the final level, and a gap of one day is provided after each exam.

Procedure for availing OPT–OUT facility

  • Submit a declaration online available at https://icaiexam.icai.org from 17th June 2020, 11 AM onwards to 20th June 2020, 11.59 PM.

  • On submitting the declaration, candidature of the student for May 2020 Examination Cycle will be cancelled. They will be shifted to the next Examination Cycle.

  • Once the option for “Opt-out” is submitted, it will be treated as final.

Students choosing to continue their candidature for the July exams will receive all the necessary help in adhering to the precautions for COVID-19. This will include wearing masks, thermal scanning, social distancing at all times, hand sanitization etc.

Further, the students who DO NOT opt-out will be given a chance to change their exam centre. This will also be available during the same window from June 17 to June 20. For any other important information, candidates can check the official ICAI notification on their website.
