Philips data science hackathon 2018

Philips, which justifies its tagline of ‘Innovation and You’, invests in the workforce of the future. Targeting the healthcare domain which has tremendous potential in the prediction of diseases and epidemics via Data Science and AI, Philips conducted a Data Science Hackathon in 2018. Students from the top 50 technology colleges across the country were called to participate in the Hackathon. The competition was based on real-life scenarios.  

Spanning across three stages, the competition required students to implement NLP as well as Data Science concepts. Also, the best 13 teams visited the Philips Innovation Campus in Bengaluru for the grand finale.

Tejaswini Chalam, the Campus Manager at PIC called the Philips Data Science Hackathon the best way to get great minds to decode. And so, Philips reached out to the student community to participate in their Data Science Hackathon. Approaching a number of students who attended the finale in Bengaluru, Philips compiled their experiences of participating in the competition. 

The Hackathon experience for students


Students from the College of Engineering, Pune said that Hackathon gave them a chance to make a difference in the healthcare industry. Moreover, on similar lines, the team from BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru, confessed that being shifted directly to the top 14 for finding a better solution was a pretty big thing for them. Another team from Amrita College of Engineering, Kollam said that the way the events were handled was really nice.

An insight into what Philips is all about!


Hareesh Prabhu, the Director at HSDP Research and Development said that the idea behind the Hackathon was to give students an experience of the cutting edge technology that Philips is working on. He also said that it was interesting to see the different approaches taken up by students when they viewed the Philips Data Science Hackathon in different angles. 

We gave the students an opportunity to walk through the labs and interact with the senior architects. We wanted to give them the experience about what it really takes to become a professional in the days to come, he added. 

The winning team from BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru, said that it was a huge thing to win. They did not even expect getting there. The students from Kollam, on the other hand, concluded with: “It is not about winning, it is about the journey. It is about how you connect with people and how you see the things that function around you”. In addition, they said that they will love to come back to Philips and win the competition the next time.
