For Hitesh Singh, it was not only a dream come true but achieving his aim of making a career in the dairy sector. Hailing from IIM Ahmedabad, Hitesh got placed as an Associate Manager at Country Delight. Son of a chauffeur at Amul, he always thought of getting into this sector despite the hardships and scarcity of resources he faced in his entire life. Let's have a sneak peek at what inspired him to pursue a career in the dairy sector after studying in the most coveted business school of the country - IIM-A!
Father's dream of IIM-A fulfilled
Hitesh's father, Pankaj Singh is a chauffeur of his employer R.S. Sodhi, Managing Director of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (Amul). When his father visited IIM Ahmedabad with his employer who was supposed to render a guest lecture, he wished to see his son studying in the same prestigious business school.
The wish came true when Hitesh scored 96.12 percentile in CAT. As per him, “My father couldn’t believe it when I first told him that my name was on the list. I had to convince him that it is indeed true. Yes! His dream has come true,” He proved to his parents that their hardships and sacrifices for his higher education did not go in vain.
Preference to dairy sector
Hitesh pursued a postgraduate programme in Food and Agri-Business Management after getting inspired by his father's employer who guided him throughout his journey before getting admission into b-school. He recalls his father saying, “If you don’t study you will have to go back to the village and become a farmer”. This made him ponder why the farming business is not considered a profitable business. Hence, he developed a keen interest in marketing and supply chain of dairy products which made him pursue the course to solve farmers problems who are not able to generate profits from farming.
For Hitesh, “...studying alongside the brightest minds in India, I grew as a person. Now, I am more aware of my strengths. That has helped in boosting my self-confidence,”.
As a note to all similar beings looking to walk on the road not taken, Singh says, “Find the thing which drives you and pour your heart into it to achieve it. Cultivate the value system in your life. What I think is that success and failure are part of the journey but what drives our life is our value system.”
