Everyone has their own reasons for doing an MBA. A majority enter into this 2-year long extravaganza for learning and networking. Learning within any educational set up is a given and the primary agenda for all parties involved. Networking comes in a close second, especially in a B-School setup. Networking, within and without the B-School campus.
What is key to the whole act of networking is People! A B-School will, in its own ways teach you the skill needed to make connections and use them. Leveraging a connection is something that you will pick up along the 2 years. But what if a B-School does not teach things like how to be one with people. How to understand what makes them tick!
Alekhya Chakrabarty, Brand Manager- Vivel, ITC | Unilever | Emami | MakeMyTrip; talks about the importance of understanding people and their underlying motivation. He says that people lie at the very core of every life situation, personal or professional. And it is key to understand how they are wired to be able to co-exist in a symbiotic relationship.
Alekhya goes on to explain how it is key to understand people in an organization to ensure productivity. He says it never just you out there accomplishing tasks, its a collective effort.
You have to work with people, you have to get work done by people. These people can be your juniors, your seniors or your peers. It is important to know how to get work done from different levels of the hierarchy.
He concludes by saying that this is something that he has learned over the past decade while dealing with people from different walks of life. His suggestion to the young leaders looking to making their foray in the business world is that they should start working on their people skills right away. A B-School setting is a perfect backdrop to try experiments to this effect.
