  • The Indian Institute of Science was established in 1909 by joint efforts of the Maharaja of Mysore, the Govt. of India and Jamsetji Nussarwanji Tata.
  • The foundation stone of the institute was laid in 1911.
  • The institute is located in Bangalore and is spread over an area of 370 acres of land.
  • The institute was started with just two departments- General and Applied Chemistry and Electrical Technology but today it has over 40 departments spread across 6 divisions- Interdisciplinary Research, Mechanical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Physical and Mathematical Sciences
  • The institute also has its new campus located at Challekere in Chitradurga district in Karnataka.

Our mission is to realize our vision by: 1. Imparting world-class higher education in an environment of fundamental and applied research in science and engineering 2. Conducting high-impact research, generating new knowledge, and disseminating this knowledge through publications in top journals and conferences 3. Applying faculty expertise towards the success of national science and technology initiatives 4. Applying deep knowledge in various areas to create know-how and developing such knowhow for utilization by industry and society
