About National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala
- The Institute (earlier Tripura Engineering College) was established in 1965 with 3 branches of electrical, civil and mechanical engineering.
- On 23rd February 2006, Union Cabinet approved the proposal of State Government of Tripura to convert the Tripura Engineering College to National Institute of Technology.
- The Institute was fully funded by Central Government and was also given the status of Deemed University as well as the National Centre of Excellence.
- The Institute is approved by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).
Objectives of the Institute:
In order to fulfill the needs of society, the Institue aims at:
- Influencing the technical practices of the non-governmental and governmental organizations through its UG and PG teaching program for the young prospective technocrats, consultancy, research and training of corporate executives.
- Spreading the technical knowledge from the institute level to the entrepreneurs, so as to improve the economic development of the region and nation as a whole.
- Making technical education and innovative system more effective and devising a mechanism to facilitate an application of research findings to solve the problems of the industry.

1. To produce techno-managerial human resource in line with global need offering state-of-the-art facility, research, and training in engineering and allied disciplines. 2. To enhance the effectiveness of technical education with an innovative system and devising a mechanism to facilitate the application of research findings to solve real problems of industries/academics. 3. To nurture and sustain an academic ambiance conducive to the development of intellectually capable and committed professionals so that effective growth is obtained for the economic development of the region and the nation as a whole. 4. To establish the corridor of higher education for the Southeast Asian countries.
