Over The Wall Season 12: Stages and Timelines

Marico Quiz

All the registered teams would be required to take a 15 Minute Quiz based on Marico Trivia. The top 3 winners of the quiz would get exciting prizes from us! It is mandatory for all registered teams to participate in the Marico Quiz Round. The top 20 teams from the wildcard institutes would get an opportunity to move to the Business Idea Submission Round.

Business Idea Submission

Teams would be required to upload either a 2-minute video or a 2-page proposal to pitch their one big idea on a few focus pivots which are mentioned in the competition structure section.

Please note: All the registered teams from the main campuses and the top 20 teams from the wildcard campuses respectively will be eligible for this round.

Campus Face-Off

The shortlisted teams from Business Idea Submission round have to submit their Proposal for the Campus Face Off Round in which the teams will be presenting their ideas to a panel consisting of Senior Marico Leaders.

Mentorship Phase

Each of the shortlisted teams will be assigned mentors from Marico. The shortlisted teams will work with their respective mentors to prepare their innovative submissions for the CXO Round.

CXO Round

The Top 7 teams will have an opportunity to present their proposals to our MD & CEO and our CXO members.

Live Project with Marico Innovation Foundation

The Top 3 teams will then have the opportunity to work on live projects with the Marico Innovation Foundation (MIF) for a month. It is a unique exposure that enables the teams to get into the shoes of a business leader to solve critical real time business problems for a Start Up organisation.

Grand Finale

After completion of the LIVE Project with MIF, the Top 3 teams will present their proposals/ solutions to the Marico panel comprising of our Founder and Chairman Mr. Harsh Mariwala and other senior leaders.

Eligibility Criteria:Over The Wall is open to all students (1st year and 2nd year) pursuingflagship full-time 2-year MBA coursesfrom the 20 eligible B-Schools and the Top 20 teams of the Ǫuiz Round from the 30 Wildcard Campuses.

Team Formation Guidelines:

  • A team can be formed with 2-3 members.
  • Team members can be from different specializations.
  • A team can comprise students from both 1st year and 2nd year.
  • A student can be a part of only one team.
  • Cross-campus teams are not allowed.
  • All the team members are required to verify and confirm their details to form a team.
  • At least two students from each team should be present during every round of the competition.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Teams will have to submit their proposals online on the Over The Wall competition listing on Unstop.
  • Only one proposal per team is allowed.

Competition Structure:

  • Marico Ǫuiz:Teams would be required to take a 15 Minute Ǫuiz. The questions would be based on the journey of Marico. The winners of the quiz would get exciting gift hampers.It is mandatory for all registered teams to participate in the Marico Ǫuiz Round.The top 20 teams from the wildcard institutes would get an opportunity to move to the Campus Face-Off Round. Onlt the team leaders are required to attempt this assessment.
  • Business Idea Submission: Teams would be required to upload either a 2-minute video or a 2-page proposal on:
    • A promising business idea to accelerate the ‘Diversification of Marico’s businesses’ through innovation which enables the expansion of our existing portfolio, thereby unlocking the next phase of growth across the following categories:
      • Foods
      • Premium Personal Care
      • Innovation in Hair Care
      • Innovation in Fabric Care

Proposals will be assessed on the following criteria:

  1. Relevance to Marico Context
  2. Consumer Desirability
  3. Innovativeness of the Idea
  4. Feasibility of Implementation
  5. Depth of Market Research / Consumer Insighting

Campus Face-Off Round:Of all the submissions, the shortlisted teams would have an opportunity to present to a jury comprising Senior Leaders at Marico. From this pool, the Top 7 teams basis the jury decision would be taken forward to the CXO Presentation Round!

Guidelines for Submissions:

  • Any relevant workings/ data needs to be attached in the annexure.
  • Due credits should be given to any references taken.
  • Naming Convention: TeamName_CampusName_OTW12

Mentorship Phase: Each of the shortlisted teams will be assigned a mentor from Marico. The shortlisted teams will work with their respective mentors to prepare their innovative submissions for the CXO Round.

CXO Round:The Top 7 teams will have an opportunity to present their proposals to our MD & CEO and also our CXO members.The proposal should have a maximum of 5 slides (excluding team introduction and annexure) that should highlight the following:

  • Details of the business idea – Business Opportunity, Description, Product USP & Value Propositions, Competition Landscape
  • Target Group and Market Research
  • Sales & Marketing Plan
  • Packaging & Delivery Innovation (if any)
  • Other Execution Details (Risks/Mitigating Plan)
  • Business and Financial Impact: Revenue estimation, ROI etc.
  • The top 7 teams would also compete for member votes and the number of votes will be considered to decide the winners of thePeople’s Choice Award. This would be independent of the Jury decision and the winner of the People’s Choice Award will be rewardedINR 1 Lakh.

Live Project with Marico Innovation Foundation: The Top 3 teams will work on live projects with the Marico Innovation Foundation for a month. It is a unique exposure that enables the teams to get into the shoes of a Business leader to solve critical real-time business problems for a Start-Up organization.

With an endeavor to fuel and nurture innovation,one promising business idea with the potential to scale up may receiveseed funding from Marico*.The potential of the business for seed funding would be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Business Plan:
    • In-depth research on market opportunity
    • Product USP & Value proposition
    • Competitive landscape
    • Scalability Potential & Future Roadmap
  • Execution of Plan:
    • Product Pricing & Its Rationale
    • Sales & Marketing Plan

Mergers and Acquisitions:

  • In July 1999, Marico acquired Mediker from P&G. MARICO Industries Ltd (MIL), the Mumbai-based Rs 885-crore FMCG player in the hair and edible oils segment, had announced the national launch of its Mediker brand of anti-lice treatment shampoo and oil in a natural avatar in the year 2014.
  • In 2011, Marico acquired male grooming, skincare, and food portfolio in Vietnam which helped in strengthening its position in South East Asia.
  • In 2013, KAYA Skin Care demerged from Marico and established itself as a separate entity. Marico Packaged consumer goods have demerged its services business Kaya into a separate listed firm as a part of the business restructuring process. The company created two separate companies through partitioning of the current Marico Ltd, into an FMCG business company ‘Marico Ltd’ and a Kaya business company viz. ‘Marico Kaya Enterprises Ltd’
  • In 2018, Marico announced that it will acquire up to 22.5 percent equity stake in Revolutionary Fitness. According to the company, the move is aimed towards strengthening its healthy lifestyle offerings.

  • In May 2019, Set Wet, Marico’s male grooming and hairstyling brand launched its first-ever Mother’s Day campaign “Sada Sukhi Raho” with a 2-part digital film series that strikes a nostalgic chord, urging young people to take a pause and call their mother. Set Wet aims to rekindle and celebrate the bond between mother and child.
  • In 2017 Saffolalife's Campaign: #protectherheart was awarded Gold in Continous Campaign (Metro Only) Category and Bronze in Integrated Campaign category by the India PR & Corporate Communications Awards (IPRCCA). Some other awards won by the company include Flame Awards (2017) and 12 STEVIES at International Business PR Awards (2016).

  • Harsh Mariwala- Chairman: Mr. Mariwala is the Chairman of Marico Limited and has played an instrumental role in transforming a conventional commodity-driven business into a leading consumer products company. Under his guidance and leadership, the company received close to about 100 awards. He has received several prestigious awards including the "Entrepreneur of the Year" Award 2009.
  • Saugata Gupta- Managing Director and CEO: Mr. Gupta became a part of Marico Limited in January 2004. He was appointed as the Head of Marketing. In the year 2007, he was elevated to become the CEO of the Company's India business and in March 2014, he was appointed as the Managing Director of the Company. Before joining Marico, he held the post of Chief of Marketing and Group Sales at ICICI Prudential and was a part of the start-up team that was instrumental in establishing ICICI Prudential.

  • Safflower productivity development- As a responsible stakeholder in the safflower value chain, Marico stepped in to help, with its Safflower Extension Programme. The plan was multi-faceted and aimed at improving various aspects of the value chain like seed development propagation, extending classes to improve yields, price security through contract farming etc.
