Parliamentary Debate: Stages and Timelines
Preliminary Round (Offline)
The Preliminary Stage will feature four concise 1.5 minute speeches: Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, Member of Parliament, and Member of Opposition, designed to test clarity, structure, and quick thinking under time pressure.
Knockout Stage (Offline)
The Knockout Stage will feature four 2 minute speeches by the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, Member of Parliament, and Member of Opposition, followed by 1 minute rebuttals from both the Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition to test depth of argumentation and quick counterplay.
Finals (Offline)
The Final Round will feature four 3 minute speeches by the First and Second Proposition and Opposition speakers, followed by 2 minute rebuttals from both sides to showcase depth, persuasion, and mastery in argumentation.
All that you need to know about Parliamentary Debate
The Parliamentary Debate brings the structure and vibrancy of legislative-style discourse into Olythea, offering participants the opportunity to engage in dynamic and adversarial debate. Conducted in teams of three, this format assigns participants with two debators and one adjudicator, with motions revealed only shortly before each round begins. This ensures that teams must think quickly, strategize effectively, and collaborate seamlessly to present strong cases.
Team Size: 3 members
Event Dates: 30th October, 2025
Entry Eligibility: Open to all college students.
Venue: Delhi Technological University (East Campus)
Format:
- Each team consists of three members
- Teams are designated as either:
- Government (Proposition): Defends and supports the motion.
- Opposition: Challenges and opposes the motion.
- Each Team has two debators and one adjudicator who will be judging and making ballots
- Speaking Order:
- Prime Minister (Government 1) – Defines motion, sets framework, and presents arguments.
- Leader of Opposition (Opposition 1) – Rebuts PM’s case, presents counter-arguments.
- Deputy Prime Minister (Government 2) – Rebuilds Government’s case, rebuts Opposition, adds a new matter.
- Deputy Leader of Opposition (Opposition 2) – Rebuts, sums up Opposition case, and closes debate.
NOTE: Motions will be revealed shortly before each round begins and all rounds will be held on campus (DTU, East Campus).
