Design-A-Thon: Stages and Timelines
CAD Model Submission
Objective
Your team must submit a CAD model that addresses the design challenge (which will be released at 5 PM on May 16th). This is the only mandatory requirement for qualifying to Round 2.
Deliverables
- Mandatory: A fully designed CAD model relevant to the problem statement
- Optional (for bonus points):
- Engineering calculations (e.g., structural load, energy consumption)
- System block diagram
- Use case and mission environment
- Logic/Flowchart
- Compiled report or slide deck
- Simulation/demo videos (if applicable)
- GitHub link (if code is written)
Assessment Criteria
While the CAD model is the main qualifier, the optional deliverables can enhance your team’s score and improve your chances of selection. Judges will evaluate:
- Creativity and originality
- Technical feasibility
- Relevance to the use case
- Clarity of design
Offline Finale – Pitch & Showcase (On Shortlist)
Round 2 – Offline Finale at RVCE, Bengaluru ,Monday, May 19, Location: R.V. College of Engineering, Bengaluru , Activities: Pitching, Walkthrough of Designs, Technical Q&A with Industry Experts , Duration: 4–5 hours (including presentation)
All that you need to know about Design-A-Thon
Overview
The Design-a-Thon 2025 is a fast-paced technical competition where teams will use their creativity and engineering skills to solve real-world challenges. This competition focuses on designing innovative solutions in fields like robotics, aerial systems, sustainability, and smart infrastructure.
Prize pool worth:
₹30,000 (including cash & software licenses)
What’s it about?
The goal is to think creatively, design practical solutions, and showcase your ideas through CAD models, calculations, and, if possible, simulations or intelligent control systems. The competition encourages participants to work on real-world problems and apply their knowledge to create working, functional designs. It’s not just about drawing plans—it’s about making ideas work!
How it works
- Team Formation:
- Team size: 1–4 members.
- Eligibility: Open to all undergraduate students from any institute in India.
- Inter-college teams: Allowed.
- Inter-branch or inter-disciplinary teams: Encouraged, as it brings different perspectives.
The Challenge:
Participants will be given a challenge related to engineering design. The task will involve:
- Ideation: Coming up with creative solutions to the given problem.
- Design: Turning ideas into actual designs using CAD tools or other design methods.
- Simulation (optional): Showing how your design would work in real life using simulations or adding intelligent systems (if applicable).
- Calculations: Ensuring the design works practically by validating it with calculations (such as weight, force, efficiency, etc.).
Judging Criteria:
- Creativity: How original and innovative your solution is.
- Feasibility: How practical and realistic your design is.
- Technical Accuracy: How well you’ve applied engineering principles.
- Presentation: How effectively you can communicate your idea, through models, calculations, and simulations.
Timeline:
- The event will span over several days with a deadline for final submissions.
- Teams will work under time pressure, so time management is key!
Prizes & Recognition:
The winners will be rewarded with cash prizes and certificates. There are also opportunities for showcasing your design to industry professionals, which could lead to internships or collaborations.
Why Participate?
- Gain hands-on experience in problem-solving and design thinking.
- Work with students from different disciplines and colleges, broadening your perspective.
- Cash prizes and recognition for your hard work.
- Add a prestigious event to your CV.
Rules
- Eligibility: The competition is open to all undergraduate students. You can form teams across colleges and disciplines.
- Team Composition: Teams must consist of 2-4 members.
- Design Requirements: All designs must be original. Plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
- Simulations & Models: While simulations are optional, you should present a clear and understandable model or design.
- Time Limit: You will have a specified time to complete your design. Late submissions will not be accepted.
- Judging: Judges will assess the creativity, feasibility, and technicality of your solutions.
- Presentation: Prepare to present your design and explain how it solves the given problem, with supporting calculations, models, and simulations if possible.
