About the Challenge
Space Apps is an international hackathon that occurs over 48 hours in cities around the world. Because of citizens like you, we continue to grow each year. If you haven't already, join us to share ideas and engage with open data to address real-world problems, on Earth and in space. Work alone or with a team to solve challenges that could help change the world. Check back here to find a Space Apps event near you, or sign up to participate virtually.
Part of the Open Government Partnership, Space Apps is an annual event that pulls citizens together regardless of their background or skill level. Don't let the name fool you... it's not just about apps! Tackle a challenge using robotics, data visualization, hardware, design and many other specialties! Inspire each other while you learn and create using stories, code, design and, most of all, YOUR ideas. Show us your problem-solving skills and share your talents with the world!
Coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and everyone enthusiastic about curiosity come together to address challenges we face on Earth and in space!
Now, we invite you to be a part of this exciting, collaborative scientific exploration, as we pair NASA’s data with problem solvers across the globe. Join us on October 19-21 for the 2018 International Space Apps Challenge, with challenges to better understand Earth and Space!
Last year’s hackathon was our largest yet, with 187 events and more than 25,000 people participating across six continents. We’re excited to continue the tradition of inviting students and professionals, beginners and veterans from all corners of the globe to join in.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is America’s civil space program and the global leader in space exploration. The agency has a manifold workforce of around 18,000 public servants and works with multiple U.S. contractors, academia, and international and commercial partners to traverse, seek, and increase knowledge for the benefit of humanity. With an annual budget of $23.2 billion in the Financial Year 2021, which is lesser than 0.5% of the overall U.S. federal budget, NASA supports higher than 312,000 jobs across the country, generating more than $64.3 billion in total economic output (Fiscal Year 2019).
With 20 facilities and centers all over the United States – and the only National Laboratory in space – NASA studies our planet Earth, our Sun, our solar system, and beyond in space. We conduct numerous researchs, development and testing to advance aeronautics. We develop and fund space technologies that would enable future exploration and benefit life on our palnet.
