Shell is an international energy company with expertise in the exploration, production, refining and marketing of oil and natural gas, and the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals.

Royal Dutch Shell plc (the Company) is a public limited company registered in England and Wales and headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Business model

Shell is an international energy company which specializes in the development, exploration, refining, production, and marketing of oil and natural gas, as well as in the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals. They are one of the world’s largest independent energy companies in terms of market capitalization, cash flow from operating activities, and production levels.

The integration of the businesses is one of their competitive advantages, allowing for optimizations across their global portfolio.
Their key strengths include:

  • the development and application of innovation and technology
  • the financial and project management skills that allow them to safely develop large and integrated projects
  • the management of integrated value chains and the marketing of energy products
  • The distinctive Shell pecten, a trademark in use since the early part of the 20th century, and trademarks in which the word Shell appears have helped increase the popularity of the brand globally.

Organization Structure

1. Integrated Gas (including New Energies):
This organization covers two strategic themes: Integrated Gas, which is a cash engine; and New Energies, which is an emerging opportunity.
a)Integrated Gas manages LNG activities and the conversion of natural gas into GTL fuels and other products. It includes natural gas exploration and extraction, and the operation of upstream and midstream infrastructure necessary to deliver gas to market. It markets and trades natural gas, LNG, electricity, and carbon-emission rights and also markets and sells LNG as a fuel for heavy-duty vehicles and marine vessels.
b)In New Energies, they are exploring emerging opportunities and investing in those where they believe sufficient commercial value is available. The main focus is on new fuels for transport, such as advanced biofuels, hydrogen, and charging for battery-electric vehicles; and power, including from low-carbon sources such as wind and solar as well as natural gas.

2. Upstream
The upstream organization covers three strategic themes: Conventional Oil and Gas, which is a cash engine; Deep water, which is a growth priority; and Shales, which is an emerging opportunity.
It manages the exploration for and extraction of crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. It also markets and transports oil and gas, and operates infrastructure necessary to deliver them to market.

3. Downstream:
The downstream organization comprises two strategic themes: Oil Products, which is a cash engine; and Chemicals, which is a growth priority.
It manages different Oil Products and Chemicals activities as part of an integrated value chain, that trades and refines crude oil, and other feedstocks into a range of products which are moved and marketed around the world for domestic, industrial and transport use. The products they sell include gasoline, diesel, heating oil, aviation fuel, marine fuel, biofuel, lubricants, bitumen, and sulphur. In addition, they produce and sell petrochemicals for industrial use worldwide. The Downstream organization also manages Oil Sands activities (the extraction of bitumen from mined oil sands and its conversion into synthetic crude oil).

4. Projects & Technology:
Projects & Technology organization manages the delivery of our major projects and drives research and innovation to develop new technology solutions. It provides technical services and technology capability for the Integrated Gas, Upstream and Downstream activities. It is also responsible for providing functional leadership across Shell in the areas of safety and environment, contracting and procurement, wells activities and greenhouse gas management.

Technology and innovation

Shell continuously looks for technologies and innovations of potential relevance to the business. Their Chief Technology Officer oversees the development and deployment of new and differentiating technologies and innovations across Shell, seeking to align business and technology requirements throughout their technology maturation process.

In 2018, research and development expenses were $986 million, compared with $922 million in 2017, and $1,014 million in 2016. Their main technology centres are in India, the Netherlands and the USA, with other centres in Brazil, China, Germany, Oman, and Qatar.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Shell Foundation: Enterprise Solutions to Scale:

Shell Foundation is an independent charitable foundation that was established by Royal Dutch Shell in 2000 to catalyze scalable and sustainable solutions to global development challenges. It applies business thinking to a range of social and environmental issues linked to the energy industry.

An ‘Enterprise-based’ Approach: They believe that “enterprise-based solutions” are by far the most efficient way to generate development impact at scale in ways that are independent of charitable aid or subsidy in the long-term.
Hence they try to find innovative measures to:
1. Identify the market failures that prevent products and services with the potential to support sustainable development from reaching the poor
2. Co-create new business models with long-term ‘social enterprise’ partners, both for-profit and non-profit, to service these markets, and
3. Provide “more than money” business development support to help these partners develop the skills, capacity, and incentives to operate at scale and achieve financial independence.

Targeting Scale and Sustainability:
1. Cleaner Cooking: a major social, economic and environmental challenge: Since 2002 Shell Foundation has been working to create a viable market for “clean” cookstoves in India: stoves that significantly reduce fuel usage, fuel emissions and cooking time.
In 2007 Shell Foundation co-founded Envirofit as a global strategic partner to design, produce and distribute clean cookstoves. With over 300,000 stoves sold, Envirofit is now the clean cookstove market leader across India.

2. Access to Reliable Electricity: Since 2008, Shell Foundation has been working with a team of talented entrepreneurs in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states, to scale up a rural electrification company called Husk Power Systems. The company generates electricity through the gasification of rice husk – an abundant waste feedstock found throughout India’s rice belt – and sells that electricity on a pay-as-you-go basis to local communities.
With over 80 power plants, Husk Power Systems now serves over 200,000 people in Bihar state – with plans to expand to nationwide over the next year.

3. Last mile retail distribution to rural India: Shell Foundation is working with the rural marketing company, Project Dharma, a social enterprise established in September 2009, to serve the needs of rural households at the Bottom of the Pyramid by creating a rural distribution network providing customized products and services sold at a socially affordable price point. The company provides income-generating opportunities for rural entrepreneurs and consumers in order to create sustainable livelihoods at the rural level.
