In order to promote critical thinking in students, IIT Gandhinagar has collaborated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to initiate an online ’30-30 STEM’ programme. The programme aims at focusing on conceptual understanding and the basics of subjects like Mathematics and Science.

In a series of 30 online sessions that will be live, students shall be taught unique and creative basic contents every Sunday for the consequent 30 weeks. IIT Gandhinagar’s Centre for Creative Learning (CCL) in association with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IIESR, Pune) and CBSE has co-jointly initiated the ’30-30 STEM’ programme. Through this, they endeavor to make the ongoing curriculum interesting for students and bring out the inherent beauty in the process of learning.

STEM is the abbreviated form of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The ’30-30 STEM’ programme, therefore, is indicative of breaking the boundaries that limit a particular subject and acknowledging the sense of wonder and curiosity that lies within the curriculum. This online platform shall be accessible to teachers, students along with their parents.

The first online session of '30-30 STEM' programme was held on 16th August, 2020 which received about more than 1,50,000  views in a single day. It was held from 4PM to 5PM, on the theme of “Adventures of A4 Paper” which saw many students, their parents and teachers participating with full energy. The discussion uniquely explained topics such as ratio and proportion, the similarity of triangles, lengths, volumes and the distance between Earth and the Moon, besides many others.

The option of live polling

‘30-30 STEM’ is the first online educational platform in India that uses the option of live polling as it actively engaged a huge audience of more than one lakh viewers asking them about the clarity of the topics discussed, which in some ways resonates with a physical classroom setup.

The option of live polling in the ‘30-30 STEM’ intrigued the viewers and their response chart was revealed on their display in real-time. Participants were additionally given homework along with open-ended puzzles that were in tandem with the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) framework.

A far-sighted initiative

Professor Manish Jain who is the prime facilitator of the ‘30-30 STEM’ programme and an Associate Teaching Professor at IIT Gandhinagar said that the vision of the initiative is to unlock the mystery and magic of Science and Mathematics. He added that since these subjects are considered monotonous and hard, the ‘30-30 STEM’ programme tries to make the complex ideas simpler by probing the Science and Maths that is all around us.

The upcoming 29 sessions will cover the themes and topics from class 6th to 12th, making the online session more exciting with the aid of puzzles such as combinatorics with playing cards; Mathematics inside the calendar; 3D visualization with kheera and many others. These topics are meant to promote critical and creative thinking amongst the participants.

Anyone interested in the ‘30-30 STEM’ programme can watch the sessions on CCL YouTube channel as well as on Vigyan Prasar’s channel on JIO TV. The sessions will be live every Sunday from the time span of 4 PM to 5 PM and shall be there later as well for further viewing. Participants who register for the ‘30-30 STEM’ programme shall be given a participation certificate. Besides this, CBSE has also decided that it will cull out some teachers, as per their dedication in participation and homework, for an internship at IIESR Pune, IIT Gandhinagar or at CCL, India.
