The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) is one of the 23 IITs created to be centres of excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India. The premier institute recently made headlines with its diamond jubilee celebrations, which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.

With 60 years under its belt, IIT Delhi combines both education with innovation. The plush campus has become a hub of innovations with 500 patents filed over the course of the last five years. Read further to know more about the initiatives and collaborations the institute has recently engaged in, to keep up with its impressive reputation.

Five goals set for 2030

IIT Delhi combines education with innovation through the set up of five bold aspirations for the year 2030. During its diamond jubilee celebrations, Hon’ble Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released the strategy document named, “IIT-Delhi: Setting the Vision and Direction for 2030”.

The first of the five goals the institute wishes to achieve by 2030 is to provide its faculty with resources which include grants, infrastructure for exploring technology development and commercialization for applied research.

Secondly, it will provide its students with modern learning and research experience through increased investment in technology. This shows how IIT Delhi combines education with innovation to ensure that its students and faculty both are up to date with the current trends.

Its third goal is to revamp industry engagement while the next goal focuses on contributions to research areas of social, rural and other potential areas. Its fifth and last target is to nurture a start-up culture amongst its students and faculty with an aim to bridge the gap between entrepreneurship and research.

Development of cobotics hub

IIT Delhi recently received funds amounting Rs. 170 crore from the Department of Science of Technology (DST), to develop a technology innovation hub on Collaborative Robotics (Cobotics). According to IIT Delhi’s director, the hub will not only perform research in the area of Collaborative Robotics, but will also proactively translate the outcomes into products.

The revolutionary cobotics hub aims to tune the precision and ability of robots to work tirelessly in an environment where humans cannot work. It will cover the fields of medical robotics, agriculture and disaster management, defence, and smart manufacturing, showing exactly how IIT Delhi combines education with innovation with its interesting initiatives.

Centre for use of AI in highways

The premier institute has partnered with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to set up a Centre of Excellence for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in highways. The partnership will focus on identified thrust areas like project management and data management, highway network, traffic demand and incident management.

Through this collaboration, IIT Delhi combines education with innovation as it will develop advanced analytics based on AI, prepare simulation models, and enhance data storage, all with the help of its students and faculty. The institute will also provide the space and infrastructural facility support for this initiative.

Collaboration for agricultural research

The method in which IIT Delhi combines education with innovation is inclusive of diverse fields across the country. This is proved through its recent collaboration with Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) which focuses on agricultural research.

The two institutions will work jointly in the field of sensor application in agriculture, precision farming, geospatial technology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and other aspects related to agricultural research. The collaboration aims to generate frontier technologies and produce quality manpower in the field of agricultural research and education. It also hopes to address the challenges faced by rural communities and improve their quality of life.

It can be said, without a doubt, that the premier technology institute of the country has paved the path for revolutionary research with its numerous initiatives and collaborations. IIT Delhi combines education with innovation in such a way that its students and faculty get the hands-on experience they need to prosper in life.
