‘The journey of miles begins with a single step’, goes the common saying. Entering a B-School is as mystical as it seems. Every CAT aspirant enters the premises of coaching classes with a dream of entering a Tier-1 college. They strive hard to clear the exam with flying colours. As per their liking and observations, they shortlist 5 - 6 B-Schools they’d like to get into. Few aspects which every B-School provides and has in common are experiential learning, case-based learning, presentations, student interactions, industrial visits, guest lectures, etc.
Where the transition might be enchanting for many, the journey of a student from the battle-ground to the gates of the campus is exhausting.
“Bricks and mortar lifted the campus,
The giant classroom, momentous.”
One of the most important aspect of any B-School is its campus and classrooms. But there are several other things that are common in B-Schools. The academic rigour and alumni support act as catalysts. As per my interaction with Dr. Minal Pathak (Global Centre for Environment and Energy, Professor, Ahmedabad University), business schools these days are less open to non-management aspects such as social sciences and environment which needs to change. They are reluctant to open up on sensitive topics such as Democracy, governance, etc. compared to western B-Schools.
To sum up, I’ve compiled a list of 5 common things present in every B-School:
Importance to teachers
Technology can never replace teachers. A teacher is a must for any B- School. Teachers are the first guiding light who ensure that we make the best of our time in college and that we pay considerable emphasis on the relevant topics. The way they motivate and encourage cannot be replaced by anything else.
Adopting the best curriculum
The curriculum is designed in such a manner that it motivates students. It compels them to work harder and strive to achieve better grades in class. It helps students understand the importance of education, the relevance of theoretical knowledge which goes a long way in framing their analytical mindset.
Teamwork
Students on the campus are made to work in teams. B-Schools stress on the importance of teamwork. This is what instils the necessary skill of managing a number of people when working in groups. In addition to building tolerance and enhancing creativity, it teaches students the art of resolving issues when a difference of opinions arise.
Assessment and monitoring
Students are continuously assessed and provided guidance whenever necessary. This assessment makes the students aware of the areas they are weak in and where they are required to work. Teachers keep a tab on the progress of students which helps them grow and develop into a better individual.
Sharing a common goal
Everyone shares a common goal of carving the strengths of the students. Where teachers have the goal of bringing the best out of students, healthy competition is observed amongst students which helps them grow together and reach the top.
Business colleges are the very first foundation block in students lives. They give an idea of what the future will have in store for them. Considering the important aspects, these are the 5 primary things every B-School has in common.
