A perfectly framed induction program to introduce the batch of 2020-22 to the life at IIM Raipur -By Nimisha Darira

The pandemic has dampened several plans students had set out for the year 2020. One of my plans which could not be fulfilled due to the lockdown included attending the induction program and starting my new life at IIM Raipur this year. Nevertheless, because the batch of 2020-22 could not physically be present on campus, the college hosted a well-planned event to familiarise the upcoming batch about the environment of the institution. Through this induction program, we were also able to connect with the faculty and our seniors. 

The induction program was a four-day event, from the 18th of August, and exposed us to several workshops, interactive sessions, and special talks from eminent guests. To mark the beginning of the induction, Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' e-inaugurated the new faculty building as well as the academic building of IIM Raipur. The event was live on YouTube and open to all. 

Special talks and workshops

My first week of starting my life at IIM Raipur was nothing short of the word eventful! The first day of the induction program hosted executive-level managers from reputed companies, who attended a session with us called “Special Talks”. The session was based on the topic of ‘Industry Expectations from New Managers’, where the eminent speakers gave us insight into what a company demands from a valuable employee. 

The second day of the induction program was another Special Talks session with our alumni, who spoke on ‘Life and Best Use of Time on Campus’. We had the opportunity of interacting with the first batch of IIM Raipur, who resolved our queries from personal yet relatable experiences. 

Things changed up on the third day, and we got an insight into the kind of work we would be doing during our life at IIM Raipur. A case study workshop was conducted which thoroughly explained to us the fundamentals of the subject, and how to approach them. On the last and fourth day, we were welcomed once again by IIM Raipur’s Director, which was followed by the e-inauguration of the new building on campus. 

In the first week itself, we were also flooded with guest lecturers, subject lectures, assignments, and competitions. Though our schedule was hectic, it definitely prepared us for our life at IIM Raipur. It also taught us about the importance of time management, and how we should prioritise multiple tasks at one go. 

Embrace your quirks

It is said that first impressions are lasting questions, but how are we to make an impression on our peers online? Interacting in virtual rooms is definitely a task, especially if you’re with people you have never met before. However, several efforts were taken by our seniors to help our batchmates get acquainted with one another. 

The admission committee, with the help of our seniors, had organised an ice-breaker session a week before the induction program. We started off by introducing ourselves, which was followed by mentioning our most quirky characteristics. Talking about our quirks, and learning about others definitely helped us get more comfortable with each other. I definitely had my apprehensions at first, but the session ended with laughter and jokes!
