The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has just released the latest notification for 2020-21 admissions with a startling derail. The regulator of Indian technological institutions has cut down seats across technical colleges by 2 lakh. This will include engineering, management, and pharmacy, bringing down the total seats to 30,86,022 from 32,85,018 from 2012-20.
This decision has come in light of the low demand of courses such as engineering, pharmacy, management, and architecture. A number of colleges failed to admit the minimum number of students necessary to run the institution and were shut down. Some colleges also failed to apply for renewal of affiliation and that too, resulted in shutting down.
The slashing of seats by almost 2 lakh, came after data from AICTE showed the lowest intake of students since 2012-13; when after almost 34 lakh in said academic session resulted in a peak of 39.6 lakh in 2014-15. Since then, the number of students in technical courses has been declining up to date.
As AICTE cuts down almost 2 lakh seats, it has said that the decision to reduce the seats was also affected by the fact that the occupied seats each year are nearly 50% of the seats offered. This means that part of the resources prepared and investments that are done in anticipation of a new batch often sit idle. Owing to this, the council decided to reduce the number this year.
Apart from this, AICTE also said that the decision is an attempt to weed out the unreliable and untrustworthy colleges. AICTE regulations are strict in execution and a required minimum of students is necessary to keep an institution running. Because of the stringent regulations, the students admitted is also declining, and hence the decision is taken in accordance with the data on the official AICTE website.
