Airtel iCreate 2018 National Winner Aakanksha Joshi’s Story

Corporate competitions like Airtel iCreate 2018 give a platform for applying the very concepts that one learns in college to solve real-world problems. It also acts as training for challenges that one might face during one's corporate career.

Airtel iCreate 2018 Case Study

When we came across the Airtel iCreate 2018 case, we saw a great learning opportunity. In the first round, out of 5000+ submissions, Top 12 teams were selected, who battled it out in the Final Round held at Airtel Centre in Gurgaon. For the Finale, all teams presented their case solution in front of an esteemed panel comprising of Airtel leaders. Telecom industry is the most challenging industry right now. We chose the sales and marketing case study where we had to develop an end to end strategy for Airtel to counter competition’s increasing customer and revenue share in 4G markets due to their 4G Feature Phone.

The Team

We were a two-member team and our skills complemented each other. This proved to be advantageous during the case study challenge. My prior work experience in the mobile handset industry helped me in thinking of new ideas. Moreover, due to the fact that we both had worked on multiple case studies and live projects in the past, data analytics and execution was another one of our strengths.

Steps for winning Airtel iCreate 2018

The first step in any case study is to gather maximum data. The amount of data we processed directly impacted our solution. We conducted exhaustive secondary research. All articles published on the Indian Telecom industry in the last one year were scanned along with articles from several research organizations. We conducted primary research, interacting with current users of competitor’s 4G Feature Phone. It was not easy to get a hold of the primary target group of our competition which was primarily rickshaw pullers, laborers, etc. However, we were determined to get the required information.

The second step is the analysis of data using specific frameworks. We applied different frameworks to assess the gaps in the current offering of competition. We also analyzed the impact on the ecosystem of competition 4G Feature Phone.

The third step is presenting an innovative, practical and implementable BIG IDEA. This is the most important step and a make or break phase. While piecing everything together, we came up with a unique idea, backed by our extensive primary research.

The fourth step is the detailing of the idea, along with marketing, implementation plans, and timelines. Here, my experience came in handy and we were able to back the idea with a high level of detail which was highly appreciated by the senior leadership of Airtel.

Airtel iCreate 2018 Grand Finale

Winning the judges over was a greater achievement than winning the competition itself. Combing through the markets, interacting with people, late night work on presentation, remaking and polishing it even further, has given us memories for a lifetime.
