According to reports, the donation will be used to establish a School of Medical Science and Technology, and a 500 bed super specialty hospital at IIT Kanpur premises.

Dr. Abhay Karandikar, the director of IIT Kanpur, made the announcement on Twitter calling it an 'extraordinary gesture'. He thanked Rakesh Gangwal and his family for their philanthropy.

A recipient of IIT Kanpur's Distinguished Alumnus Award, Mr. Gangwal had completed his Mechanical Engineering degree from the institute in 1975. After that, he went to the US to pursue an MBA degree from Wharton School, at the University Of Pennsylvania.

As per reports, the newly established medical school will be called Gangwal School Of Medical Sciences and Technology.

The Gangwal School Of Medical Sciences and Technology will be built in two phases. In Phase I, a 500 bed super specialty hospital consisting of 500 beds will be built. Along with that, there will also be an academic block, a residential hostel, and a service block will also be built.

The time allotted for the first phase of the project is three to five years, after which the second phase will begin. In Phase II, the institute plans to double the capacity of beds and add other allied disciplines such as sports medicine, hospital management, and several public health programs.

Clinical departments/centers and research areas are also expected to be expanded. The second phase will reportedly take between 7 to 10 years.

Including Mr. Gangwal’s donations, both phases of the project will involve a total cost of around  INR 600 Crores.
