An invaluable experience, my virtual internship at Deloitte Consulting India -By Vishvam Kabra from SIOM Nashik

As an intern, I was Deloitted with the whole induction and onboarding experience. Interaction with the Talent team and Leadership on the very first day prepared us for having an energetic mindset. Communications regarding rules and regulations were clarified systematically. All interns had their dedicated mentors throughout the tenure with daily connect and feedback sessions. The entire induction process of my virtual internship at Deloitte was seamless even with this pandemic situation.

But before further diving into my virtual internship journey Deloitte in detail, here is a brief description of the selection process which can be helpful for some. The selection process was kept simple and effective with 3 major progressive stages.

  • Profile shortlisting

  • Case study based group interaction to analyse problem-solving approach

  • Personal interaction to know your interest and domain knowledge and to test flexibility through your past work experiences

My engaging and exciting project

The project focussed around ERP with major scope in the domain of Supply Chain and Financial Operations. It involved solving problems of C-suite with measurable and reliable insights. The task was to project data-driven insights through data visualization. In all these toiling efforts, leadership connects acted as icebreaker sessions with insights on setting ground rules for yourself. Engagement activities like entertainment quiz and weekly HR and location SPOC connect were real stress busters. Moreover, farewell and peer to peer interaction sessions added the much-needed fun through social engagements.

Salient lessons garnered

My virtual internship at Deloitte imparted an invaluable experience and lessons learned from it will stay with me forever. Whether it is problem-solving skills, presentation skills depicting consulting flavor with client-facing experience, data visualization tools, etc, it helped me acknowledge the business world. Also, gaining insights on how the industry views your work is one of the most vital skills to understand and synergize with customer expectations.

Mentor feedback should never be ignored and is of the utmost importance when it comes to learning. The major one during my internship was how to showcase your understanding and approach in the most unique way and how to be on the storyboard with any audience in an impactful way. Last but not the least, it taught me how creative learning is the need for any industry with demanded agility in the process.

A bit of advice to young aspirants

It doesn’t matter on which project you are working, but there are certain things you need to keep in mind to stay ahead of the pack. Here are some of my experiences that can prepare you beforehand:

  • Showcasing creativity in the wrong direction can be destructive and time-intensive.

  • Always clarify your doubts within 1 week of project initiation.

  • When you are working with the best value addition prospects but are not able to showcase it, it feels terrible. Always give more focus on better presentation with the systematic articulation of thoughts.

  • Always present your point of view with backed evidence or rationale. Being too naive in setting the approach will give control of the project to your mentors. Experiences might come at a big cost and chronic problems.
