Tips For Building A Strong Network During Internship

Networking is important in figuring out the right career path. Especially when you are an intern, you need proper guidance and tips from experts in the industry. Hence, we have some tips for you to help you build your network during an internship. Make sure that before you start the day with your to-do list, you consider these points on a regular basis. Don't just set a profile and let it lie there. Get cracking. Tell people what you are up to. If you are unable to connect with people at higher positions or someone you look up to, follow them. This way you can stay updated on their posts. Comment, share, and like their posts. Be active. That’s more likely to catch their attention.

One can also join groups of their dream company or any profession they would love to work for in the future. Some of these groups are super-active on LinkedIn and share valuable content like what they are looking for, what the candidates should have in their resume, what is their philosophy, and so on and so forth. Participate in their comments more often to get highlighted.

Another prime factor to keep in mind while building your network as an intern is the way you try reaching out to people through messages on LinkedIn. For instance, do not just start with a ‘Hi’ and end with ‘I think that I can be the eligible candidate for this vacancy in your elite firm.’ This is a big NO. Tell them why they should be looking at your profile, be convincing, and give a 30-second smart elevator pitch instead.

Be a giver

When people are trying to find a rhythm in this new normal, they need support, guidance, and empathy. Step forward and think of what you can offer to your network circle as an intern. In the unending competitive race of professionalism, for a moment, think of others. Build a relationship and invest in it. Maybe you can help your contacts build their networks to find better opportunities. It does not have to be something huge. Even small and sincere efforts can help you rejuvenate and grow your network.

Maintain what you have

Even if you are an intern, it is of utmost importance that you keep your contact list up-to-date and build on it constantly. Once you’ve made a connection with any professional, maintain it over the long haul so that you can call the person when you need help. Keep them abreast of your accomplishments and career journey. On a regular basis, spend anywhere from 15-30 minutes on social media. Read their posts and if you find any achievements email the person directly. If you have any doubts, clarify them. This can help you catch up with a conversation beyond the mere intention of a job search.

Your current internships will also introduce you to a lot of useful resources. Get to know people inside and outside the team. This will enhance the probability that there will be someone to take your stand when they decide whom to hire. Also, make sure you stay in touch with them even after your internship is over via messages and emails or even coffee.

Reach out to your mentor

Your time is limited as an intern, so get the most out of your experience by connecting with your mentor. Your mentor can be a project manager, a CEO with tons of connections but less time or someone who may have to juggle many responsibilities across departments. Whoever it is, they have rich experience and amazing connections. 

Be in their highlights and keep them updated about your progress. This sincerity can give you a trustworthy and long-lasting network that you can rely on. However, it is equally important to respect their timings and ask for their time in a well-mannered way.
