The coveted Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) awarded IIT Madras a hat-trick by putting it first for the third time in a row. IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi were placed second and third respectively. Though, 7 spots were taken by IITs, the other three which made to the list were- Indian Institute of Science at 6th place, National Institute of Technology, Calicut at 9th place and Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology at 10th place.

Atal Innovation Rankings 2021

ARIIA 2021 classifies participating institutions into two major categories; Technical and Non-technical. The technical category has the following 5 sub-categories;

  1. CFTIs, Central University, & Institute of National Importance
  2. State University & Deemed University (Govt. & Govt. Aided)
  3. Govt. College/Institution (Govt. & Govt. Aided)
  4. University & Deemed University (Self-Finance/Private)
  5. Private College/Institute (Self-Finance/Private)

Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA)

The Ministry of Education (MoE), India, has launched the Atal Rankings Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) to evaluate all major higher educational institutions and universities in India based on factors linked to "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development."

Indicators taken into consideration

  • Support for the budget and funding of the project.
  • Facilities and Infrastructure.
  • Raising awareness, promoting, and providing assistance to the process of coming up with new ideas and implementing those ideas.
  • Promotion & Support for Entrepreneurship Development.
  • Innovative Learning Methods & Courses.
  • Generating, transferring, and commercializing intellectual property.
  • Innovation in Governance of the Institution.

The very first edition of ARIIA started in 2019 and a total 496 institutes competed to get a position in the ranking. The result was announced on 8th April 2019 in presence of Hon’ble President of India. For the 2nd edition of ARIIA (2020), a total of 674 institutes participated and rankings were announced by Hon’ble Vice-President of India on 18th August 2020. The current edition of ARIIA 2021 saw unprecedented participation as compared to earlier two editions. Out of a total of 3551 HEIs registered, 1438 institutions (including all IITs, NITs, IISc, etc.) participated which is more than double as compared to 2nd edition and approximately 4 times as compared to the first edition. This 3rd edition of ARIIA has introduced a special framework for non-technical institutions that further strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in Indian higher education institutions.
