The Indian Institutes of Technology across the country, are distinguished institutes and a dream destination for all engineering students. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that according to the QS World Rankings 2021, IIT Bombay has the best world ranking across India. IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore have also secured a place in the top 200 universities.

The QS Rankings are an annual publication that ranks universities worldwide based on pre-determined indicators. For 2021 these indicators were - academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.

21 Indian higher education institutes have made it to the top 1000 institutes across the world. While IIT Bombay has a world ranking of 172, IISc Bangalore has received a perfect score on the ‘citations per faculty’ parameter. According to the compilers of Quacquarelli Symonds, Indian higher education’s strong suit is research quality. However, it goes on to mention that most universities fall behind in:

    • Academic standing
    • Teaching capacity
    • Level of internationalization

India’s higher education universities have seen lower rankings this year as compared to 2020. However, it is not necessarily a cause of a drop in overall education quality. It is potentially because of more and more institutions across the world working intensively to develop what they have to offer.

Ben Sowter of QS quotes, “To regain lost ground, Indian higher education must find ways of increasing teaching capacity, and of attracting more talented students and faculty across the world to study in India.” Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) continues to be the world’s top university according to QS World University Ranking, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University, respectively.

The Indian institutes that have made it to the top 500 are:

172 - IIT Bombay

185 - IISc, Bangalore

193 - IIT Delhi

275 - IIT Madras

314 - IIT Kharagpur

350 - IIT Kanpur

383 - IIT Roorkee

470 - IIT Guwahati
