The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Ranking has put 8 Indian Institutes in the top 100 making India the third most represented country in the global performance table. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore is again at the top position in India and placed at the 36th spot globally. Eight IITs also made it to the top hundred, making this India’s best performance in terms of numbers since 2016.
Despite this, THE argues that “overall picture for India’s IITs (is) one of general decline amid increased regional competition”. Apart from IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi, only IIT Ropar has shown improvement by appearing in the ranking for the first time this year. The rest of the IITs have reportedly scored lower.
Four Indian institutions have improved upon their overall 2019 ranking scores, suggesting that the possible reason for the ‘decline’ could be more number of universities qualifying across Asia. IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras have made general improvements in teaching, research, and industry metrics as compared to last year. But the stagnation in the area of internationalization across IITs has resulted in a downward trend amongst the institutes.
This 'decline' in terms of quality in the case of IITs comes after the boycott of the ranking that asses universities against the UN SDGs by the premier institutes. They cited that the reason for the boycott was ‘lack of transparency’ in the ranking parameters. THE, in response to this, asked the IITs to participate and that the boycott could prove to be damaging. IIT Kharagpur performed exceptionally well in the Impact ranking released just after the boycott, ranking 57th globally.
