MBBS students would now be required to pursue mandatory internship training in the Ministry of AYUSH with other postings. This comes in as per the Draft Regulations for Compulsory Rotating Internship 2021 released by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on July 7, 2021.

What do the NMC Guidelines say?

Following are the various instructions given in the latest NMC Draft Guidelines are:

  1. Undergoing a training internship in the Union Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Sowa Rigpa, Homeopathy) is being made compulsory for all MBBS students.
  2. The medical interns would be required to complete this training along with postings in 17 other specialties in a 12-month period
  3. The 17 postings are divided into 14 mandatory postings and 3 electives.
  4. The AYUSH interns would be allowed to choose any elective from the following - Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa or Homeopathy.
  5. The draft regulation for Compulsory Rotating Internship, 2021 says that a week's training should be a part of the rotational schedule of any of the Indian systems of medicine as an elective.
  6. Training of 1 week each in 2 of the super-specialty disciplines - cardiology, nephrology, pulmonary medicine, medical oncology - has been included in the internship for MBBS students.
  7. The duration of the internship could be curtailed/temporarily suspended/withdrawn/cancelled at any time by the college/ institution/ university, provided the prevalent regulations of the relevant authority.
  8. The minimum duration the Compulsory Rotating Internship could be extended as deemed apt in cases of insufficient attendance, unsatisfactory acquisition of required competence, unsuccessful qualification on assessment, or due to any exigency.
  9. It has also been recommended that students complete their internship from the same institute that they graduate from, so that no scope for transfers is left. Many students seek to transfer from their private colleges to government colleges for better exposure.

Considering the difficult times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the NMC had asked the medical colleges to hold final year PG broad specialty and super specialty exams at the earliest. The President of the PGME Board, MK Ramesh, has also allowed the institutions and universities that offer PG medical programmes to evaluate the theory answer scripts, as per their discretion itself.
