Dear Recruiter (First name)

My name is X and I am studying for a dual degree in Economics and Finance at (University name.) Upon attending JP Morgan's networking breakfast in City X, I had the pleasure of meeting JP Morgan (employee 1) and JP Morgan (employee 2) who provided me with great insight into JP Morgan's different divisions, roles, and culture. Knowing this, I am applying for a full-time investment analyst role in Investment Banking within the M&A group.

Completing my internship in real estate investment management at firm Z has provided me with the necessary skills and experience to work in M&A. In the banking summer analyst position at (real estate investment firm's name), I evaluated commercial and multi-family properties using real estate financial modeling (REFM) and comparative market analysis. This assisted me in gaining strong analytical skills and instilled in me the importance of being detail-oriented. Additionally, I also helped the fund director raise USD 50 million in capital from high-net-worth individuals for a new real estate fund. This enabled me to develop key skills, like strong client-servicing and communication skills. I hope these experiences and key skills will prove to be a valuable asset within the M&A team at JP Morgan.

I am a highly motivated person and working at JP Morgan would enable me to interact with the financial industry on stimulating projects as well as work with the industry's most diligent people and prolific clients.

Your culture of the 4 principles - client service, operational mess & responsibility, and winning culture portrays the ideal working environment that encouraged me to apply there. Additionally, I am impressed with JP Morgan's presence on campus to actively seek young talent, which provides me with the fortunate belief that the environment at the firm is truly inclusive. I believe from my professional achievements and track record, I'm a strong fit for JP Morgan's analyst role in M&A investment banking. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely,

Dear Recruiter (First name)

I wish to apply for the post of Finance Analyst at JP Morgan. I recently graduated from XYZ University with a Bachelor's degree in Finance & Accountancy. I graduated at the top of my class and have an avid interest in building a career in the financial markets.

Though I've never worked full-time before, the projects and clubs I headed during college and the internships I did have helped me build the relevant skills for the role. I am skilled in financial analysis, budgeting, and MS Office. My internship with XYZ Bank played a pivotal role in strengthening my interest in the area while also teaching me relationship management skills.

Throughout my graduation, I continuously demonstrated my interpersonal skills while heading the finance club and organizing the annual fest. My tenure as the club's president played a key role in helping me enhance my skills and instilling in me the importance of building a rapport with people.

I am interested in this particular position because it offers an opportunity to use my skills and knowledge in a real-world setting. I am excited to learn and grow in this role and am open to relocation.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Now that we've seen a few sample cover letters, let's study the importance of a cover letter and its sample template in detail.

Why Do You Need A Cover Letter

A cover letter is another tool that job seekers can use to convince a potential employer to hire them. A successful cover letter is one that draws the recruiter's attention, convincing him to consider the candidate for the role.

The most important reason to write a cover letter is to summarize your professional experience and list of skills in a way that convinces the recruiter that you are a good fit for the role - especially when applying for experienced roles. You could do so by highlighting company projects that you headed in your last role or highlighting significant achievements.

Writing A Cover Letter: Template

There is no standard template or format for a cover letter, but most are one page long, concisely framed in three (at most 4) paragraphs, and professional in tone. Here's a step-by-step instruction or template for writing a cover letter:

Para 1: Introduction

After the address and salutation, state the reason for writing the cover letter in the introduction itself. This involves specifying the role that you're applying for, along with basic information about your work and/or academic history (in case you're a fresher)

Para 2: Why You

The second paragraph forms the main body of the letter. Herein, you need to highlight your skill set- both technical skills and soft skills. Also, include any significant professional achievement relevant to the role

Para 3: Call To Action

This is where you close the letter. You can talk about why you're interested in working with the firm or talk about what is it about the industry that attracts you. However, always end with a Call To Action - giving the recruiter a chance to reach out to you.

Cover Letter: Things to keep in mind

Here are a few things to keep in mind when writing a cover letter:

  • Always check your letter for typos and ensure that it's free of grammatical errors and other silly mistakes.
  • Be wary of writing a generic cover letter. A generic letter that does not highlight your unique skills will only waste the recruiter's time. And be of no help to you.
  • Only include relevant experiences in the cover letter. A resume may list every job experience you have, but a cover letter should only focus on the most important and relevant experiences - based on the role you're applying for.
  • Don't ramble. Keep the cover letter concise and to the point.
