Delhi University sets up NEP 2020 Implementation Committee

Earlier in the month of August, the Central Government set afloat National Education Policy with the recommendation to implement it across the country. In tandem with the recommendation and for the smooth and hassle-free execution of the Policy, the Delhi University has constituted the NIC (NEP Implementation Committee). The committee will suggest guidelines as per NEP 2020 and ensure transparency in the execution of policies in the varsity.

Terms of reference for the NIC

The Committee has been formed to advise and suggest administrative and financial implications in the implementation of NEP. It will also suggest certain modulations which will reflect in the existing syllabus and will put forward a time frame for the adoption of those changes as per the guidelines of NEP 2020.

The NIC is in charge of suggesting the most appropriate mechanism/tool for incorporating and formalising the implied activities and changes, outside of the peripheries of departments and faculties as mentioned in the NEP 2020.

The task of assessing and analysing the changes pertaining to the system of examinations and student intake across regular, open-learning, and non-collegiate classes is also under NIC. The Committee will also suggest what changes should be made to engage with the stakeholders.

Major changes in policy

The National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29th, 2020, five years later the committee to draft the NEP was constituted. The policy was drafted by a committee that was chaired by K Kasturirangan.

As far as the school and higher education system are concerned, the policy sets forth some major instrumental changes. The system of ‘affiliated colleges’ will be phased out gradually over a term of fifteen years through a system of “graded autonomy.” The policy also focuses on the multidisciplinary nature of subjects wherein there would be no hard distinction between streams.
