GATE 101: Everything you need to know about it

The gate to achieve anything beyond a bachelor’s degree in Engineering is through clearing GATE, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. An all India exam which centers around judging the students on grounds of their technical aptitude, it is conducted by the GATE committee on behalf of the NCB or the National Coordinating Board, from the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources. The committee incorporates faculty members from the seven IITs and IISc, Bangalore. The organizing institute for this year, i.e., GATE 2020 is IIT Delhi.
The candidates sitting for the exam can appear only in one of the 24 papers. In general, the candidates sit for the paper in accordance with the discipline of their qualifying degree. However, an individual is free to choose the paper they want to sit for according to their future admission plans. They just have to keep the eligibility criteria of different institutes in mind.
The following candidates will be eligible to sit for GATE 2020:
The exam necessarily consists of three sections of General Aptitude, Technical Questions and Engineering Mathematics. With an exam duration of 3 hours, the paper consists of a total of 65 questions with a maximum score of 100. The questions either are multiple-choice or numerical answer type. For the multiple-choice questions, every correct answer is awarded either +1 or +2 and the corresponding negative marks are 0.33 and 0.66 respectively. Around 25 to 40 marks are allotted to the numerical answer type questions. With each question carrying 1 or 2 marks, there are no negative marks for these type of questions. The score in the three sections is individually divided as:
General Aptitude: 15 marks
Technical Section: 70 marks
Engineering Mathematics: 60 marks.

If you aren’t aware of the perks of qualifying GATE with a high score, the preparation doesn’t really hold any value. - Students in the final year of their bachelor’s or those who have graduated in the field of Engineering/Technology (having pursued a 4-year course after class 12 or a 3-year course after Diploma/B.Sc in Engineering/Technology).
- Students who either are in their final year of Architecture (5-year course) or those have graduated in the same.
- Final year students or the degree holders in the bachelor’s of Science program (4-year course).
- Final year students or the master’s degree holders in any branch of Mathematics/ Science/ Statistics or Computer Applications.
- Candidates who have an integrated master’s degree of four years in Engineering/Technology (post B.Sc.) or the ones who are in second or higher years of such programs.
- The ones who have an integrated master’s degree or a dual degree of 5 years in Engineering/Technology or who are in their fourth or higher years of such programs.
- Candidates who have an integrated M.Sc. degree (5-years) or have an integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. degree (5-years) or are in the final year of such courses.
- Candidates who have obtained their qualifications via examinations conducted by professional societies, which are recognized by AICTE/ UPSC/ MHRD and are deemed as equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech programs. The list of eligible individuals also includes the ones who have completed section A of either AIME or equivalent of such professional courses.
