“Happy accidents are real gifts, and they can open the door to a future that didn't even exist” - David Lynch, an American filmmaker, musician, painter, writer and virtual artist

Zomato’s recent hiring of an ex-intern for the position of Co-Admin of its Instagram handle is the perfect example of what David Lynch meant. In this recent turn of events, Zomato made its most unconventional job offer to one of its ex-interns and took the netizens by storm.

Zomato, a food delivery platform that provides information, menus and user reviews of restaurants, took an out-of-the-box approach to hire one of its ex-interns to its social media team.

How did Zomato catch sight of the intern?

The intern designed a small social media campaign where he depicted various delicacies being offered by thousands of restaurants over India in an innovative fashion. From ‘Poori’ to ‘Aadhi’ to ‘Soya chaap’ to ‘Jaaga Chaap’, the post showed these food items in an unconventional fashion.

Many instagram users noticed this unique campaign and liked the idea of the intern. These users were so elated that they started making requests to Zomato ranging from giving a raise to the intern to offering the intern a full-time job.

One of the instagrammer said, “Dedo bechare ko job, par aise posts se bacha lo re baba”.

One other instagrammer commented, “Wow. Intern ki dimaag ki batti jal gayi”.

Another instagrammer commented, “Intern needs and instant promotion”.

With the ex-intern’s post gaining attention Zomato added an Instagram challenge to it. Zomato’s post read, “50K likes on this post and we offer him a full-time role”.

What was the result of the Zomato challenge?

As soon as the challenge was rolled out the post received over 50K likes in just over 3 hours.

Immensely happy with the results of the challenge Zomato released another post that read, “The best part for us was learning that the ideas are worthless until you get them out. They’ll be eventful at worst, but game-changers at best”.

The next day after 50,000 likes had been reached, Zomato offered a full-time job to the intern. The job letter read:

Dear Intern,
On public demand, we are forced to offer you a full-time position as co-admin of our social media handles.
Your daily responsibilities include:
1. Not bragging about getting 50K likes on the post
2. That's it.

Your annual compensation would still be 'exposure'.
P.S.: Please note that in case any of your future posts get less than 20K likes, you would be demoted to an intern again.

Zomato released the entire story from the start of the social media campaign to the point where a full-time job offer was made.
