First year at IIM Lucknow was a gruelling experience -By Vaishnavi Subramanian from IIM Lucknow

A B-school is a source of knowledge, culture, and energy. The clouds pave way for a blazing sun as it sheds its warmth on the beautiful campus of IIM Lucknow. The well-manicured lawns flaunting a myriad of flowers, with an occasional glimpse of peacocks and the sound of the birds chirping are beautiful. Here is my journey about how first-year at IIM Lucknow was a grueling experience for me.

Convocation time

The tension and excitement are almost palpable in the air as 450 students (some of the best minds of the country) eagerly await validation of their two years of hard work. Yes, it was convocation time. As I see my seniors sitting in their graduation outfit, smiling with a tinge of nostalgia and looking at the convocation ground one last time, my mind flashes back to my own year at IIM Lucknow, or what we proudly call as Hell.

I remember letting out a whoop of joy as I saw my admission letter, and I remember fantasizing about what my life would be like in the next two years. However, nothing could have prepared me for whatever was there in store for me.

I remember walking through the gates for the first time and we were greeted by our alums who trusted us with the legacy of the institute. Then I entered my classroom with my name printed at the front of the seat. The professor conducted a surprise quiz in class and proudly received collective groans. I remember chasing ridiculous deadlines and staying up till late night in the night mess completing a project. Also, I remember how I got introduced to some people who have always had my back.

The first year at IIM Lucknow

My mind flickers to the present as I meet a bunch of my favorite seniors. We laugh all the time and promise to stay in touch. It would be fair to say that the previous one year would have been impossible without their constant advice and guidance. They were not merely friends, but family. They say the first year at IIM Lucknow is one of the grueling experiences that a student can go through. When I see someone congratulating a friend on his or her birthday, it reminds me of mine.

Birthdays have always been memorable at Hell. People stay awake till 12 am to offer solid punches and splattering cake all over your face. It also included bringing favorite cakes and gifts. How can one forget so many memories? I remember the inter-section wars where 8 sections competed for Sangram, the inter-section sports war and Sangharsh, the inter-IIM sports fest.

How can you forget the night outs during the first year at IIM Lucknow? It included sleeping in classes, bringing toothbrush and facewash, the hunger pangs that threaten you at 3 am and impromptu events. How can we forget the night mess and its delicious Maggi and rolls coming to the rescue?

IIM Lucknow: A place infamous for its rigorous pressure

The summer-placements were really important to us. From intense sessions of CV reviews to case preparation and culminating the D-day, the process was tough. As intense flashes of memories came hitting me with those celebrating festivals on campus. It also includes memorable trips or just long walks under the stars figuring life out. The one year at this B-school had already given me innumerable memories to hold on to.

And as I saw the end of the convocation ceremony drawing closer, I couldn't help but felt glad that I had another year left to experience more of this place. IIM Lucknow, a place infamous for its rigorous pressure and sweet memories would become my home for another year.
