“Hard Work Will Always Bear Fruit For You”- Team Junipero, Flipkart WiRED 5.0 Winner

Flipkart WiRED, one of the top case competitions for MBA students, again witnessed a massive response from students for its 5th edition. The reputed competition gave an opportunity to students to gain PPIs. Let’s hear it from the winners of Flipkart WiRED 5.0 - Business Track on their journey of sheer hard work to achieve success.

How's The Josh?

As Flipkart WiRED is one of the popular competitions for MBA students, participating in it seemed like a no-brainer. I participated with my team Junipero, a bunch of highly enthusiastic individuals (Charu Kalra, Varun Batra, and me) keenly interested in the field of marketing. We always believe that hard work and knowledge are the two factors necessary for achieving success and this was clearly reflected in our results when we won the competition.

The Groundwork

The preparation for the case competition began from the very onset of the quiz round. The initial stage was quite challenging as it was highly competitive and had more than 40,000 teams participating in the competition. In order to ace the quiz, I revised the basic concepts and looked at the previously asked questions to understand how to approach the round.

The further rounds of the competition dealt with case studies and presentations. So, we focused on the generation of ideas for innovative solutions. Then, after the ideation phase, we tried to make sure that the ideas are feasible for Flipkart to implement.

Dealing with Impediments

With the majority of work being online and having a busy schedule, we did have our challenges while preparing for the competition. The first challenge we came across was that each one of us was busy with prior commitments such as internships and academics.Thus, time management was difficult but something we were able to manage by prioritizing our work accordingly and maintaining constant communication regarding the progress of work.

While working in a team, it’s quite natural to have differences in opinions. But, rather than having conflicts, the whole experience made our friendship bond stronger and made us realize how well we truly function as a team. Our team leveraged the strengths of each member as we know each others’ strengths and weaknesses. One was good at designing the presentation and has experience in videography, the other is ingenious and helps in ideation phase. Overall, by leveraging our strengths, we came up with a solution that was not unique and remarkable but something striking and presentable to the esteemed Flipkart jury.

Knockout Pressure!

When we entered the semis, we were a bit skeptical about how our solution would be perceived. But, upon hearing the motivating words of the panel, we knew we were moving on the right track towards the glory. As jury members were already impressed, we just required a bit more effort in the grand finale.

After the acing the semis, we reached the pinnacle of the competition, the grand finale. The finale had 5 teams with many tough competitors that made their way through the highly competitive rounds of the competition. But, for us, the toughest competitor was the team from IIM Bangalore as we were highly impressed by their solution and found their ideas to be very practical.

Key Takeaways

The competition was truly one of its kind. The overall quality, organization, and framing were second to none. It was quite a unique experience that had a lot of takeaways for our team. The biggest lesson that I learnt from this experience is that hard work will always bear fruit for you and no knowledge learnt is ever wasted. Everything that I learnt in my MBA through internships, research projects and academics, helped a lot in winning this competition. The experience bolstered our belief that hard work and knowledge are the two factors necessary for achieving success.
