It's the season of examination. Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the universities and colleges are either cancelling or postponing the examinations. While some are still trying to make the best of what is available and conduct online classes the usual way, Indian Institute of Technology, Goa (IIT Goa) on the other hand has taken it a notch higher with its innovative question paper.
Write your Questions & then Answer!
One of the biggest issues that comes hand-in-hand with examinations is that of cheating and when it is an online exam, the chances are even higher. To eliminate this major issue of plagiarism, IIT Goa came up with an extremely quirky way to end this semester. They curated a question paper which was without any questions!
According to the End Semester ‘Analog Circuits’ question paper, which has gone viral, the IIT Goa faculty asked students to prepare the questions for themselves and then answer the same. As per the instructions given on the paper, the students were told to “prepare questions of 60 marks from the lecture materials” which were provided to them in the entire semester and then answer the questions that they prepared. Framing the question alone would fetch them 30 marks. This move changed the entire dynamic of the exams.
Need for this divergent thought?
The IIT Goa lecturers believe that setting a question will require a complete understanding of the course and reflect their understanding of the same. If the student has not gone through the course properly, they won’t be able to prepare any question, leave alone answer it and to add more that, professors can even detect cheating and plagiarism if the students go for the same questions.
This “outstanding” examination will not just test the calibre and the depth of understanding of the student but will also test their integrity while eliminating cheating to a great extent. The 70 mark paper said that the questions that the students prepare should reflect their understanding of the course. It also asked them to avoid discussing with friends as similarities in the answers or questions may reduce their score.
While the framing answers that have the same points as others might not be foolproof evidence of cheating, having the exact same question definitely is. And thus, netizens are all in for it, lauding this brilliant step.
