GATE paper analysis, 7th Feb 2021, 2nd shift

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) which is the qualifying exam for admission to various postgraduate courses in the field of engineering (MTech, ME), architecture, and sciences in some recognized institutions of India and abroad is being conducted this year by IIT Bombay. The GATE paper analysis for 5 papers that were conducted on 7th February in the evening shift is given here.

The exam is being conducted in the computer-based mode in morning and evening shifts. 12, 378 students had registered for the papers held on 7th February 2021. In the evening shift, the paper was conducted from 3 pm - 6 pm.

Detailed analysis of the 5 papers  

The 5 papers conducted were of the following subjects:

Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)

The paper was reported to be of “moderate to difficult” level. Some main topics covered in the paper were Digital Circuits, Control System, Signals and Systems, Analog circuit, Network theory. Few questions were lengthy as told by the exam takers. The aptitude section was easy. The expected cut off (for General category candidate) is 28.8

Petroleum Engineering (PE) GATE Paper Analysis 

Though the paper was reported to be of low difficulty level still it was lengthy. It had a total of 65 questions out of which 55 were from Petroleum Engineering and the rest 10 were from General Aptitude. The expected cut-off (for General category candidate) is 39.8

Environmental Science & Engineering (ES) GATE Paper Analysis 

This paper was introduced for the first time in GATE and was reported to be of easy to difficult level by students. It was divided into three sections - Environmental Science & Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, and General Aptitude. 

Statistics (ST) GATE Paper Analysis 

The level of the paper was “moderate”. It had a total of 65 questions out of which 55 were from Statistics and the rest 10 were from General Aptitude. The paper was of 100 marks and both sections consisted of 1 mark and 2 mark questions. The expected cut-off (for General category candidate) is 25

Production & Industrial Engineering (PI) GATE Paper Analysis 

The level of paper was “moderate”. It was divided into three sections - PI, Mathematics and General Aptitude. 70% weightage will be of the PI section and the rest 30% will be equally divided amongst the rest two sections. The expected cut-off (for General category candidate) is 36.6

The GATE exam score remains valid for 3 years. The candidate needs to qualify a minimum expected cut-off released by conducting authority and the institute’s own qualifying cut-off in order to get shortlisted for counselling.

The cut-off depends on a variety of factors such as number of candidates who took the exam, difficulty level of the exam, number of seats available for the course, category of the candidate.

Finally CCMT counselling will be conducted for admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and COAP counselling is done for admission to IITs.
