What is a Group Discussion?

A GD round is an integral part of both MBA placements and the admissions process. In this round, a group of candidates is given a GD topic to carry on a discussion and share one’s views on the same.

Structure of Group Discussion

Ideally, the entire round lasts for about half an hour. The first 5-10 minutes of the round are for candidates to prepare and streamline their thoughts before the actual discussion begins. Once the GD begins, the candidates discuss the topics and the panelist(s) observe the candidates and judge them on various parameters.

What’s being evaluated?

An applicant needs to stand out during the discussion by presenting solid points confidently and concisely, with proper explanations. The observer is most likely to judge your command of the language, ability to convincingly present your ideas and analytical and leadership skills.

We will elaborate on the skills you will need to successfully handle GD topics i.e. the skills the panelists are looking for, in detail ahead. But first let’s have a look at the various categories of GD topics, and relevant topics, per category.
