How an internship at Adani Group gave the right push to my career | Ritesh's story
Pursuing an internship at Adani Group was the second most mind-blasting experience of my life after my selection in IIM, Ahmedabad. The life of a B-Schooler is in no way short of a roller-coaster ride; you sign up for the adventure, fasten your seatbelts, and there you go, at the speed of a rocket.

Similar was my tenure with the Adani Group. When the internship notification came out, I had applied to a handful of companies to test my value in the market. To my surprise, I cleared the internship interview for a Tech Consultancy and the Adani Group. I had always wanted to experience the culture, dynamism, and exposure of a renowned brand, early in my career. So, my decision was crystal clear. I was going to go ahead with an internship at Adani Group.

What is the selection process for an internship at Adani Group?

The entire selection process followed by the Adani Group gave me a clear glimpse of how challenging (and inspiring) my interning journey is going to be like. After all, the extremely exhaustive selection process screened the students through the following process:-

  1. Shortlisting of CV

  2. Group Discussion

  3. 2 rounds of Personal Interviews

Since the internship was in the same city as my B-School, I could not get a chance to explore a new place. But the project assigned to me indulged me quite well during the period. I was assigned to do an extensive market and client research to develop and execute strategic logistical solutions for the company. Now, this felt like something that would add value to the company’s processes and my skills.

What did I learn during my internship?

The internship enabled me to apply all that I had learned in my B-School in the real-world scenario. The course on ‘Business Research Methodologies’ helped me greatly in exploring all about the market and draft appropriate strategies. It also helped me make more sense of my education and understand the fine line between bookish concepts and their real-world application. Something that added real value to my internship was the dynamic culture that led me to think critically and improve my skills to identify and solve problems.

One of the other areas where my internship with Adani’s upskilled me was ‘people’ and ‘project management’ skills. These, I think, are much-needed skills for any B-Schooler.

What is the work culture at Adani Group?

The highlight of my B-School internship was a team outing. No, not to a sports bar or a café, not even for dinner. It was right in the middle of the Arabian Sea on a Tugboat to pull off a Panama size oil tanker. I know it sounds crazy but this was one of the major highlights of my internship at Adani Group.

The experience was great and made me realize the importance of working in a professional environment during our studies. It made education more relevant and understandable. In addition, receiving excellent feedback for my work and ideologies was a real motivator.

All in all, my internship experience was a full-on package of learning. The workplace culture was extremely inviting and accommodating. I always had mentors and peers ready to help me out of any fix.

What did I learn from my mentor during my internship at the Adani Group?

My mentors played a significant role during my internship. They coached me to understand that being a great manager takes a lot more than just what college teaches. To be a great manager, only solving problems is not sufficient. Identifying the right problems and solving them is the main deal.

One major learning I’m going to take from my internship and apply it throughout my career is that solving real-world problems requires out-of-the-box, and sometimes slightly unorthodox thinking. Bookish knowledge is only as good as it gets - in the end, you need hands-on experience!
