How an internship at Grofers made me realize the importance of Excel | Pratik’s story

Grofers is an Indian online food item conveyance service. Established in December 2013, it is based out of Gurugram. Only 5 years into its establishment, it has raised more than $440 million from financial specialists including SoftBank, Tiger Worldwide and Sequoia Capital. E-commerce and warehousing are the future industries which are booming day after day. I wanted to learn how an order is processed when shopping on a mobile application. Thus, when an opportunity from such an esteemed organization presented itself, I seized it. An internship at Grofers is one opportunity that I didn't want to miss out on!

What is the selection process for an Internship at Grofers?

The selection process for an internship at Grofers has the following components:

  1. Shortlisting of students based on CV

  2. Group Discussion

  3. Personal Interview

The selection process began with the shortlisting of students from a pool of registration based on our CV. An on-campus group discussion round was next. It comprised of topics on operations and logistics. Further, the students were filtered and half of them reached the final interview round with the Director of operations, India region. My personal interview lasted for almost an hour. I was grilled on the operations front and warehousing techniques. Knowledge of operations is a must if you want to clear the interview with ease.

What was my role during the internship at Grofers?

My role at Grofers was of retail operations. My project was entirely based on warehouse operations. Mumbai is my hometown. So, I was lucky to have been allotted the Mumbai region warehouse. I did two projects. The first was a live project, implemented in my presence. It bore fruitful and quantifiable results. The project was to design the layout of the warehouse to reduce the order picking travel and to save time in picking orders. After implementation, the travel was reduced by 36% and the time was saved by 30%. I was happy to witness this.

The second project was more of a suggestion. I had to increase the storage capacity inside the warehouse by 15%. By increasing the existing utilization, I was able to prove that the warehouse capacity can be increased by 19% without any expense. Excel is a very important tool here. Since you work with data in any e-commerce industry, excel is a must have. In addition, warehousing techniques and warehouse processes are also required to improve existing techniques and save money.

What did I learn during my internship?

My joining for the internship at Grofers was in Gurugram city. The to and fro flight tickets and a week of business-class hotel stay was provided. It was pretty amazing. After two weeks of orientation, luckily, I was posted in my hometown, which meant I would be closer to my family and could see them from time to time.

Patience and the ability to deal with workers are the major takeaways from my internship at Grofers. The warehousing industry is ever growing and dynamic. We should, thus, be well versed with the latest trends to be able to sustain. When my project was approved and given a green signal for implementation, I was very excited to be able to contribute to the company. Overall, it was a unique experience and I garnered a new suite of skills.
