How an internship at Nomura improved my skills in time management and leadership | Bhavika's story
What is the selection process for an internship at Nomura?
The selection process for an internship at Nomura had the following components:
- Shortlisting on the basis of CV
- Group Discussion
- Personal Interview
The first step was CV based shortlisting. This was followed by various rounds of Group Discussions. And finally, there were a few rounds of Personal Interviews as well. The Group Discussions and Personal Interviews tested an individual's knowledge in the finance domain and their cultural fit in the company.
What did I learn during my internship?
For my internship at Nomura, I worked as a Business Analyst with the Change Management Team. My project was risky and compliance based. I got to work on my analytical skills and learned to perform accurate gap analysis and precise documenting. Improved research, time management and leadership were other areas I became better at. I wanted a role that could put my technical background (engineering) and current interests (finance) into one single bucket. Thus, The role I got here at Nomura was a perfect mix of these two.
I had to move to Mumbai - the city of dreams for my internship at Nomura. It provided a perfect blend of culture, customs and lifestyles. The cool sea breeze blowing at the beaches of Mumbai refreshed and breathed a new life into me! Thus, the experience of learning and living on your own in a new city was amazing. It taught me to evolve, to come out of my shell and to become independent. Each day taught me something new.
What was the work culture of Nomura?
I remember the time when we went out for a Corporate Social Responsibility activity. The crazy hobbies of the seniors amused me. The stories they shared made us laugh a lot and this helped in strengthening my relationship with the team.
Some of the memorable moments I had with them include:
- Winning the IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia) day poster painting competition in an investment bank.
- Organizing various fun and knowledgeable events for colleagues.
- The moment when stakeholders appreciated my work and trusted me to implement my ideas.
My internship at Nomura was, above all, a riveting experience. The work-life balance and tremendous growth opportunities here are unmatched by any other organization. I was extremely happy to have done this internship as I learned to communicate in a corporate setting. In addition, I gained the confidence to put forth my ideas and developed the required skills I needed for my future.
